Obey all posted signs and warnings. Read all product labels and follow all instructions when using fertilizers, pesticides, or other chemicals in the greenhouse. Do not eat or drink in the greenhouse when soil, plant nutrients, or other organisms or compounds could enter your food (during planting or harvesting, for instance). Take frequent cooling breaks and drink fluids when working in the greenhouse on hot days. Closed-toed shoes must be worn when planting, fertilizing (or applying anything other than water to your plants), or working with heavy-objects. Do not touch common surfaces (door knobs, faucets) with gloved hands. Supplies specific to your lab (soil, amendments, pots) should be labeled by research lab Pots or benches should be labeled with researcher’s name, name of plant material, and the date planted. Clean up Procedures: Sweep all dirt and plant material from the counters and from the floor after working; dispose in an outside dumpster Clean planting surfaces with a 10% bleach solution before and after planting Take your waste soil and plant material outside to a dumpster Plants treated with bacteria, fungi, insects, or other organisms should be disposed of ASAP as per faculty instruction Users must wash their own pots with soap and water at the end of their experiment. Do not wash soil down any drains. Wash pots outside, if possible. Pesticide Use: Our greenhouse is transitioning to a pesticide-free facility. Pesticides are rarely used. Any pesticide used will be a product labeled for home use and will be applied at the recommended labeled rates. When pesticides are used, greenhouse users will be notified with a sign posted on the door. Users must obey all posted signs and warnings. REI stands for Re-entry Interval and defines when the greenhouse is safe to enter after a pesticide application. Do not enter the greenhouse until after the posted REI.
