Team Canada Open Tryout/Season Information Team Goals There are two primary goals of TC Open for the Summer of 2016, the requests and information thereafter are designed for us to achieve those goals. Goal 1: To play our best ultimate at the Worlds Championships in England July 2016 Goal 2: To play a brand of ultimate that is both strong in style, but also in character. We will rebrand the international perception of Canadian men’s teams and start building a stronger sense of trust, spirit and fair-play into the Canadian identity. Who is on the selection committee for the team? The selection committee for the Canadian Open team consists of ; Scott Hastie (head coach), Mark Lloyd, Jeff Lindquist, Derek Alexander and Kevin Underhill. Kevin Underhill is also serving as the Ultimate Canada representative. To get rid of any conflicts of interest, Mark, Jeff, Derek and Kevin have all been given spots on the Team. What is the tryout process? The first part of the tryout process involves a written application. All players who wish to attend the tryouts are able to do so. However we encourage only serious applicants to attend. At the in-person tryouts we will be testing a wide variety of scenarios including; person defense, throwing ability, team play, in game adjustments, offensive abilities, one on one matchups. Spots on the final team will be based upon i) Attitude ii) Athletic ability iii) Ultimate IQ iv) Cohesion with the rest of the team v) Commitment to the teams goals How many out of region players will you be taking? The core of the team will be based out of Toronto, Ontario, but as per Ultimate Canada guidelines we will be taking a minimum of five players out of the region (Ontario). We have not limited the amount of out of region players we will take, but it should be noted that team chemistry is a very important part of our vision. How many players do you plan on taking? The WFDF roster limit is 28 players for WUGC. We assume that we will be taking 28 players to the tournament. Initially we will be selecting a roster of 22 players and 12 alternatives. This will allow for some players to work on some things over the winter as well as recover from injury. Can anyone tryout? At this point, yes anyone can tryout. However if we receive too many applications that we feel we would not be able to fairly judge everyone at a tryout we reserve the right to pre-screen applicants so that we can ensure our field space/time will be best used. Also… All national team members are Ultimate Canada Registered Competitive Athletes in the 2016 calendar year. Before approving team rosters, Ultimate Canada will check rosters to ensure that all players are compliant. Ultimate Canada may also require a code of conduct form signed by all national team players. Our team also has to meet WFDF requirements. What if I can’t attend a tryout? Will I still be considered? Your best way to make the team is through an in-person tryout. However if you are unable to make a tryout it is recommended you explain why you are unable to make the tryout. All applications will be given a fair read/consideration. How much will tryouts cost? Why costs for tryouts? Tryouts will cost $75.00. This is to cover costs of fields, but also in doing two tryouts we will have to fly our selection committee out to one or two of the tryouts. Instead of asking players to all travel to one location we are doing two tryouts in hope that costs will be decreased on an individual basis. How much will it cost to play on the team? Our initial estimates is that it will cost in the range of $5000.00 (includes player fees, training weekend trips, travel to and from event, room & board at Worlds event).
