Course Description:
This is a one-year course offered at the Livonia Career
Technical Center. The course is designed to prepare the student for entry into the
automotive service technician. This will be done by the student performing the tasks
associated with- in the automotive technology service field. Included are the
disassembly, inspection, diagnostic testing, repair and reassembly of specific
components of the automotive engine, body, and chassis. The students will also be
given an opportunity to practice and improve skills used to meet the NATEF automotive
service credentials. Information gained through the class will allow students the
opportunity to take the steps to take the state automotive exams for automotive
technicians.
Course Objectives: This course is designed to teach the students the necessary skills
and techniques used to service today’s automotive demands. They will also receive
knowledge of other careers associated with the automotive industry.
Student Competencies: The student will perform the following tasks:
o Correct shop safety
o Correct vehicle work order write up procedure
o Correct inspection and maintained of all vehicle’s fluid systems
o Correct usage and names of hand and air tools
o Disc and Drum braking systems
o Electrical systems
o ABS/Traction control systems

Class Assignments:
NATEF requires today’s students to complete a certain
percentage of lab assignments for every given category. 40% of time the class will be in
the classroom and 60% in the lab. All lab assignments will be posted in the room for the
students to see what they have done and still have yet to complete. Classroom work will
consist of theory discussion and learning, with the textbook, handouts and videos and
once the students learn the needed knowledge we will move to lab and complete the
hands-on lab performance assignments and tasks.

Mid- Term and Final Exam
Presentations
Final Exam:
Consists of true or false, multiple choice ASE style questions, short
answer, as well as a couple essay questions. Final exam grade counts for 10% of final
semester grade.
Class Policies:
All student handbooks and school policies are enforced.
1. Student to be in their seat when the tardy bell rings.
2. Have all necessary equipment and supplies for the class, paper, pencil, safety
glasses appropriate clothing for the class.
3. Pay attention during class and demonstrations, no sleeping or any disruptive
behavior.
4. Clean up must be completed and all equipment and tools stored properly,
class will not be dismissed until I say ok.
5. No electronic devices are allowed in class.
6. Respect the rights and property of the school and others; do not touch things
that do not belong to you. No rude or harmful comments that hurt the feelings
of others. Respect yourself and those around you.
7. Do not damage or destroy shop cars or equipment.
8. Do your own work. If you copy, you will receive no credit along with the person
who allowed you to copy.
9. Parking permits are a privilege not a right they are issued on a needed basis.
10. This is your classroom, you make or break the quality of your learning
experience.
