Denison Theatre Department welcomes you to the next level of competition and we hope that this contest will be enjoyable, productive, and successful for all who participate. Fee for the contest: $625 per school to cover expenses to pay for the judge, awards, and crew. Please bring this check with you on the day of contest, and make it payable to Denison High School Theatre Department. Do not send this ahead of time. Thank you. Time of contest: The director’s meeting with the critic judges will be held at 11:00AM in the greenroom. The contest will begin at 12:00 PM, and plays will be run back to back. Performance order: (will perform “back to back”) The plays “1”, “2”, “3” are determined alphabetically by play titles of the advancing plays. See contest book for details. 1st Show District 9/10, Bi District 1A- “1” 2nd Show District 11/14, Bi District 1B- “1” 3rd Show District 11/14, Bi District 1B- “2” 4th Show District 9/10, Bi District 1A- “3” 5th Show District 9/10, Bi District 1A- “2” th 6 Show District 11/14, Bi District 1B- “3” Rehearsals: 3 schools will rehearse March 30th (1pm, 2pm and 3pm) and 3 schools will rehearse the day of the contest (8am, 9am, and 10am) Rehearsals will be set by the distance traveled by each advancing school. For example: The closest school to Denison will rehearse first. The farthest will rehearse last. Other conflicts can be considered to set this rehearsal schedule. The director’s meeting will be at 11:00AM, and performances will begin at 12PM. The contest manager will email an official rehearsal schedule as soon as all schools have advanced. We will perform “back to back”. Awards Ceremony will follow shortly after the last performance and critiques with adjudicators after that. The Adjudicators The panel of judges were assigned by the State Office. Please find technical information regarding our performing space attached. Good show! On the Day of the Contest Arrival: Please arrive at least 20 minutes ahead of your assigned rehearsal time. Please call Amy or Matthew on cell when you have arrived. Pull your bus and/or truck into the loading dock area and wait – this is located at the back of the school by the Tennis Courts – Look for the tall fly loft – After unloading your bus and/or truck can park by the Tennis Courts. Do not knock on loading door or back doors. We will raise the loading dock door when we are finished with the school ahead of you. Amy and Matthew will find you so that paperwork can be looked at prior to the rehearsal and we can get you unloaded and ready. Matthew will be meeting you at the dock with some of Denison’s theatre students to help with load in. We will be storing your items for the show in our Shop in a designated area. Once we have loaded in, we will move to the stage for your Rehearsal. Before you start, Matthew will go over specifics with you and your students about the space and Denison students will assist, technicians will be shown the booth for lighting and sound. He will also discuss the process for your Performance, during your Rehearsal you will need to show him the opening and closing of your show. After your Rehearsal you will store your items in the shop and you will then move to your holding rooms. Bring with you on contest day to show Amy at rehearsal: 1. Your check payable to Denison High School Theatre Department for $625 2. Written Proof of royalty payment for the performance of the day of contest 3. Proof of Publisher permission or author permission to Perform the play (required at rehearsal) 4. UIL permission to produce plays not on the approved lists, if applicable. 5. UIL approval for set additions to basic set (required at rehearsal) 6. Integrity script marked with sound cues for Contest Manager to use during contest. 7. Dressing Rooms & Holding Rooms: Denison has two formal dressing rooms; girls is slightly larger than the guys. You will only have the dressing room space during the show prior to yours – an estimated 45 minutes – this is shared by ALL schools. We will have a holding room for your group to hang out in and use all day as needed – you will possibly be sharing this room with another school due to space issues. Please be patient with us regarding our space, we will try to accommodate your needs in every way we can. Reminder that we are all guests in these spaces and they should be kept clean and treated with respect. Lighting and Sound: There will be Denison Theatre students available to help your students with the light and sound board. This student will be in the booth during rehearsal as well as during performance. Please see tech specs regarding our equipment. Rest Rooms: You will need to use the Lobby Rest Rooms available at the front of Smith Auditorium throughout the day. You do have bathrooms in you dressing rooms only to be used during your allotted time. 3 Technical Information Regarding Denison High School’s Smith Auditorium PLEASE VIEW THE DIAGRAM FOR A VISUAL AID OF SPECIFICS IN OUR SPACE! Performing facility: The stage is: Smith Auditorium (Proscenium stage) Seats 650 audience members – lower and upper sections 50’ wide 19’ high 24’ deep to upstage blacks from proscenium arch. 13.5’ deep apron There are also 2 side stages available to the left and right of the apron. There are multiple power outlets locate backstage left, right and against the back wall available to you. UIL Gray Unit Set: UIL set will be stacked Off Stage Right. Furniture/props will come on stage from stage left for set up – this allows easy shop access for load in and out from the stage. We will not be supplying doors or windows, you will need to bring you own if you plan on using these items – we will provide a full unit set of flats, platforms, ramps, steps and pylons. Curtains – operated by the counterweight fly system with fly loft – Denison personnel ONLY will operate this: The grand drape (black) - WE SET WITH THE CURTAIN CLOSED. Denison will operate this for your show. 2 sets of legs (black) – these both travel and are hand pulled into location. A mid-stage traveler (black) - this can be used as you back traveler to make the space smaller if wanted. A back traveler (black). A cyclorama (white) – not a traveler. Make sure you spike your curtain positions during your Rehearsal and let Matthew know which curtains you plan on using. If using the back traveler or cyc we would ask for safety that you use the back hallway for crossover as the curtains are very close to the back wall of the stage – you will need to slightly adjust your blocking time for this crossover. Lighting: We use 15 areas with Down Left being area 1 using channels 1-15. Channels 16 and 17 are specials for the side stages. Channel 18, 19, & 20 control the color washes red, blue, and green – using 15 LED fixtures. Channel 21, 22, 23 controls the CYC lights which are LED with red, blue, and green. The light board is a Strand Neo with a Light Palette fader wing. The light board is located in the FOH booth at the back of the house, upstairs, with an open window. Schools are not allowed to change the sub-masters. You will run your board manually, no recording cues. Sound: We provide a compact disc players and 3.5mm(aux) cable to play external devices like an IPod, Computer or Phone. A CD and External Device can be running simultaneously. The CD Player will be labeled as Tracks and Auxiliary as External on separate channels. We provide 82 channel mixer. Booth at the back of the house, upstairs, with an open window. Headsets: Headsets are located back stage right and back stage left, and three are in the booth for communication. The booth has an open window for communication from the house. 4
