A NEW BREAKTHROUGH I
WHAT IS AMTOX™?
The Amtox™ system is a new rapid nitrification
inhibition test that has been designed to overcome the
problems associated with conventional nitrification
inhibition tests.
Toxicity testing is a valuable method for monitoring
and controlling water pollution. However, many toxicity
tests are complex and time-consuming, requiring
skilled operators.
The test for nitrification inhibition has been used
extensively by water companies and industry alike. The
process of nitrification is highly sensitive to a wide
range of toxicants and as such is an excellent tool for
monitoring and assessing toxicity.
Conventional inhibition takes 4-6 hours to complete
and is heavily dependant on the activity of the culture
of nitrifying bacteria. However, activity levels taken
from pure cultures and sewage works can vary greatly,
giving poor reproducibility of results or
even complete failure of the test.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Amtox™ uses an immobilised culture of nitrifying bacteria to
produce a fast and reliable test result. Inhibition is measured by
comparing feed and effluent ammonia using the latest probe
technology. Results are displayed continuously via a userfriendly graphic interface.
By maintaining the temperature of the reactor at 30oC, activity
levels are guaranteed. Ongoing performance of the nitrifiers is
assured by reactor efficiency tests.
Results are displayed in either graphic or table format.
Automation of the test enables the Amtox™ to run
unattended, freeing technician time.
By using the Amtox™ system, response times can be reduced
to as low as 30 minutes.

THE AMTOX™ LABORATORY
SYSTEM
The Amtox™ Laboratory System replaces conventional
nitrification inhibition tests. The culture in the test has a
guaranteed activity giving reproducable results, making the test
suitable for NAMAS accreditation.
Suitable for acute or chronic tests, it can handle all sample
types from river waters to municipal and industrial effluents
and raw material evaluation, and can accommodate samples
with low or no ammonia content.
THE AMTOX™ ON-LINE MONITOR
The Amtox™ On-Line toxicity monitor provides protection for
the nitrification phase of waste of effluent. Fully automated, the
unit is self-calibrating and alarms if nitrification falls below the
user-defined limits.
Results are displayed on a continuous basis and the machine
can also be linked to existing telemetry systems for maximum
flexibility. Additional monitoring equipment can be attached to
the Amtox™ monitor for complex applications.
The scanning electron micrograph shows the porous nature of
the gel matrix with individual nitrifying bacteria protruding
from the surface. This allows the transport of ammonia and
oxygen into the cell and the excretion of waste products.
