Elgin Park Coach’s Duties
-
Collect and hand in team roster (See Elgin Team Information/Registration Sheet)
by your first league game.
Note: BCSS requires completed rosters by the 3rd week of the season or
the team is declared ineligible. Don’t wait till the last minute.
-
Collect and hand in the $50.00 or $20.00 Athletic Fees (see Athletic Fee letter to
parents)
Students who have not paid by the 1st game of the season will not be
permitted to play.
Note: The Athletic Fee helps to pay for your team’s ref costs, uniforms,
tournaments and other athletic dept. supplies and needs. Please be
diligent in collecting these funds.
-
Have a parent/player meeting after you select your team and before you play
your first game. Set expectations and let the parents put a face to your name.
This is also a great time to collect all of your papwork and fees.
Note: Items for the meeting should include: coaching philosophy, playing
time, athletic fee, transportation to and from games, schedule, and codes
of conduct.
-
Uniforms can be picked up through the Athletic Director’s office, either during the
Athletic Director period or after school. Please also collect a post-dated uniform
deposit cheque. Please record the athlete’s name next to the appropriate
uniform number (see Elgin Team Information/Registration Sheet)
Note: Lost uniforms cost a lot of money to replace. If I know who lost it, I
can bill accordingly.
-
DO NOT HAVE STUDENTS DRIVE STUDENTS. The transportation budget is
small, teams must find their own way to and from games. Students driving
students opens up many liability issues. Therefore get your parents organized to
drive for away games (see Volunteer Driver Form).
-
Outside coaches must meet with the Athletic Director and Principal,
complete the Community Coach Application Form and get a criminal record
check (RCMP) before they can have contact with our athletes. Please see
the Athletic Director for a letter to take to the criminal record check so that you do
not have to pay. The criminal record check must be done each year for
community coaches.
-
Read over and become familiar with the Duties of the Athletic Director, Athletics
Rules and Regulations and the various Codes of Conduct. Make sure your
assistant coaches, players, parents and spectators are equally aware should the
need arise.
-
Give the Athletic Director your schedule (league, tournament, exhibition and
playoffs) immediately so space can be booked in the gyms, refs, transportation (if
possible) etc.
-
If you would like to enter a tournament please give the Athletic Director a copy of
the tournament entry form (without it a cheque can not be processed). Do not
leave it to the last minute, as the office will not process a cheque request the day
of.
-
Email your results immediately after the games to www.sssaa.org. Don’t run the
risk of time expiring and games being defaulted.
-
At the end of the season return washed uniforms, keys and equipment.
Other Items:
-
Equipment is often shared between coaches and the P.E. Department. Please
return equipment to the exact location from which it came.
-
Indoor coaches, please unsure the gym is clean after use. Please have your
team clean up garbage and put away equipment at the end of your gym use.
-
Outdoor coaches, please have athletes clean their footwear before re-entering
the school. NO CLEATS INSIDE
-
Provide Pam Noakes: Noakes_p@surreyschools with a schedule of your team’s
early dismissals and she will email it to staff. Teachers like the communication
and it will enhance the likelihood of a student/athlete being permitted to leave
early.
-
Minor Officials (Volleyball) and Table Officials (Basketball) are there to score the
games. If requested, please help them when needed. At a home game you are
the adult in charge of the Elgin gym.
It may seem like a lot of duties, but if the administrative “details” get taken care of
properly, then the season will run smoothly. As Athletic Director, I will ensure you have
practice and game space, proper equipment, and game officials. If needs arise during
the season, please contact me.
