These formats can take various forms of character string or binary data, such as in • ISO 6709:1983 • GML and other XML flavour • Compact text encoding of latitude/longitude coordinates (Microsoft) • SHAPE (ESRI) • • • • • • DGN VPF DXF MID/MIF E00 DLG, and so on... The representation of geographic location by coordinates consists of an embedded component of these data formats. Each format represents geographic point locations by coordinates differently. These formats constitute the syntactic and schematic representation of geographic locations. Need for a standardized format for description of coordinate representation (2/3) Requirements for interoperability: • Applications and systems use different representations of geographic point locations for their exchange. This implies a transformation of such representation for interoperability, which needs to know in which format a geographic location is encoded (or represented) and/or in which format it must be encoded to perform the transformation. • For this purpose, the encoding format must be described and documented – either within the geographic location representation – or within a format registry. • To enhance the interoperability of geographic location by coordinates, it is highly suitable to have access to standardized format registers which provide the description of the encoding. Similarly to coordinate reference systems (CRS), such registers will facilitate the reuse of geographic location representation descriptions. Need for a standardized format for description of coordinate representation (3/3) • Format (registry) of coordinate representations • The standardization of a format registry will define the components of such a format and its structure. Among others, it should include the following items: – – – – – – Unique identifier Name Version Data elements and their types Structure of the data (type of separator, …) Compression mechanism Current 6709 CD Proceed as planned Trying to be backward compatible to ISO 6709:1983 Or proceed in another way… 6709 DIS ISO 6709:1983 & XML With multiple representations 6709 2nd CD NWIP 6709-2 NWIP with a new number WG9 Request/Recommendation • Discussions at this plenary will be appreciated • WG9 continues to consider this issue • There may be a resolution on this issue at Stockholm/Montreal Plenary WG9 Future Issues • At this stage there is no active Work Item inside WG9 in Stockholm – may become dormant… • Possible New Work Item Proposal – NWI related to 6709 •coordinate representation
