Willow removal along Scotchman`s Creek

Community Bulletin
Scotchman’s Creek improvement works
May - June 2017
Melbourne Water will undertake willow tree removal work from
Scotchman’s Creek, below Stanley Ave in Mount Waverly.
Why are these works necessary?
Willow trees are considered environmental weeds in Victoria and there are strong
environmental reasons for their removal as they pose a serious threat to our
waterways. Their characteristic dense canopy, invasive roots and heavy leaf fall
can smother our creeks and lead to reduced habitat and food for fish, as well as
poor water quality and flow.
The three willow trees to be removed are mostly large, old willows displaying
critical failures and trunk rot. Their removal is required for safety reasons and
also to improve habitat for animals and opportunity for regrowth of native
species.
What do the works involve?
In May, works will commence to remove the three priority trees and prune the
canopy of the two in between trees. This is expected to take 1-2 weeks to
complete. The large vigorous creeper on the north bank known as Morning Glory
will be removed at the same time.
In conjunction with the Monash Council we are planning to revegetate with native
species amongst these willows and where the Morning Glory is being removed.
All works have been planned in consultation with council and the Friends of
Scotchmans Creek.
Impacts of works
We do not expect any major impacts on local residents at this stage of the works.
