This newsletter is an important link between school
and home. I hope you will find it useful as it gives
news of forthcoming events and a list of dates for
your diary.
Please also remember to check our school website,
calendar and blog regularly for information and
updates.
Friday 12th February 2016,
Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a very short half term, but we have lots
to celebrate. We have all enjoyed learning about
and caring for the chicks and we look forward to
lots of updates and photographs from Thomas and
Abigail. The children (and staff!) have been really
engaged by our animals science topic and I have
been very impressed with the persuasive writing
that has been going on around school. Class 1
were role playing and designing posters to sell toy
animals and Class 2 wrote very persuasive letters
when they thought a “Mr Hetherington” was going
to buy our school field and turn it into a petting zoo
(they were not impressed at all!). Class 3
presented a very persuasive argument when they
thought I was going to get rid of the school guinea
pigs in favour of a nice sofa or table and chairs!
It was lovely to welcome twenty nine family and
friends into school to celebrate the children’s
learning yesterday. It was a very special afternoon
and it was a joy to see how enthusiastic and proud
the children were of their work. Thank you so
much for coming and I hope you enjoyed it as
much as I did.
Our learning:
Next half term our new topic will be, “Our Holy
Places” for Class 1, “Special stories for Christians
and Muslims” for Class 2 and “Why do Christians
and Muslims see life as a journey?” for Class 3,
including the journey through Holy Week to Easter.
The topic will be launched with a “Worship Walk”,
visiting our local Holy Places and a visit to a
Mosque. Our writing focus for English will be story
writing. Our SEAL topic will be “Good to be me”
and our Christian Value will be ‘Peace’.
Let’s Celebrate our Attendance
Our attendance figures are rising! Although we
have had a few bugs spreading around Barton our
attendance for this half term is 97%. Last year,
only two children had 100% attendance by the end
of the year, however, this academic year we are
on track for 19 children to have 100% attendance.

Thank you for your continued support with this… it
really is something to celebrate.
Primary School Football League
Mr Weighman has kindly agreed to take a team of
7 Year 5 and 6 boys to the Primary School football
league which is scheduled for after half term on
the following dates
- Monday 29th February
- Monday 7th March
- Monday 14th March
- Monday 21st March
It will be a 4pm Kick-off each evening at Richmond
School on the astroturf and we should be finished
by 6pm at the latest. We will play 3 out of the 4
evenings, depending on how many teams enter. It
will be a league format so each team will play
against all the others over the four week period.
If you are able to help us with transport for this
fantastic opportunity, please could you contact the
school office. Thank you.
Further details to follow.
Parents’ Information Evening: How we assess
and report on the progress and attainment of
your child; Tuesday 23rd February 6pm –
6.30pm
We are holding a short parents’ information
evening in school to show you how we are tracking
the progress and attainment of your child now that
we no longer use levels, so that you will be well
informed before you meet with your child’s
teacher.
We will also be showing a short video about the
new Year 2 and Year 6 SATS tests that will take
place in May.
We will also make the parents’ consultation
evening forms available on the night for you to
book a time slot.
Parents’ Consultation Evening
These will take place on Monday 7th March, 3.456.50 and Tuesday 8th March 3.45 – 5.20. Your
child’s books will be available for you to look at in
the school hall and you will be given a progress
sheet which will inform you of your child’s
attainment, progress and effort, their attendance to
date and targets for maths and English. Forms will
be available from Tuesday 23rd February at 6pm
onwards for you to select a suitable time.
Alternatively, you can call the school office to book
a time.

Intruders on School Premises
We have noticed over a number of weeks that
we’ve had intruders on our site at evenings and at
weekends. Most recently, we’ve found
evidence that the intruders have tried to set fire to
rubbish on the site. Obviously, this presents a
security risk as well as being potentially dangerous
and damaging to property. This has now been
reported to our local community police officers,
who will be making frequent spot checks
on the site. I would ask all parents, particularly
those in the village, to remain vigilant, and,
should anything untoward be spotted, please call
101 and ask for PC Wilbor. Thank you.
Messy Church:
This term Messy Church will take place on
Thursday afternoons: 3rd March and 17th March
at 2.45pm. All welcome.

Just a reminder that if we do have to close school
due to adverse weather conditions, this will be
published on our website, via text as soon as
possible and announced on BBC Radio York
– their website lists school closures and also
has a listen live facility www.bbc.co.uk/york
PE Kit:
Do help your child/ren to be organised with regard
to PE kit. Please send PE kit in on a Monday and
home on a Friday (Class 2 and 3 can take theirs
home on a Thursday), as it is needed for PE
lessons, lunch time clubs and after school clubs.
Please could all PE kit and uniform be named. It
is also important that all children have a named
water bottle in school at all times.
Uniform:
We take great pride in our smart uniform. Please
ensure that children wear the correct uniform and
smart black school shoes (not trainers).
Friends 80 Club Draw:
Congratulations to the latest Friends 80 Club draw
winners, who are:

Swimming Lessons for Class 2 and 3, Friday

Swimming lessons for children in Class 2 and 3
will continue on Friday afternoons next half term:
the last swimming lesson will take place on Friday
18th March. Lessons will take place from 2 – 3 and
we will always aim to be back to school by 3.30.
The children will be taught in four different ability
groups, to support beginners and to challenge
more able swimmers.
Year 6 SATS Club – Tuesdays 1pm – 3pm to be
held at Melsonby Methodist Primary School
Resource Room
Year 6 SATS club will continue until Tuesday 3rd
May 2016, I will be taking our Year 6 children to
join other Year 6 children from Melsonby and
Ravensworth Primary Schools to focus on the
Year 6 curriculum and to prepare thoroughly for
KS2 assessments and for life in Secondary
School.
Spring Term 2016 After School Clubs
Our after school clubs are getting some rave
reviews. For example, one of our parents let me
know that as soon as her daughter woke up this
week she asked, “Is it Tuesday?” and when it was
she cheered “Yes, it’s iPad club!” The children in
Class 3 have let us know that a lunch time club
isn’t long enough for Box 2B Fit and have
requested that we change it to after school. A
huge thank you to all our wonderful staff, including
Mrs Dreaves, in wrap-around care, and Simon
Carson Sports School, who provide such an
exciting range of extra-curricular activities.
We have a wide variety of extra curricular activities
on offer next term. Please complete the form
below if you would like your child to attend any of
these lunch time and after school clubs. To get the
most out of these activities, we would ask
yourselves and the children to commit to the whole
term. There is no need to complete a form if
you would like your child to continue with a
club they are already attending this term.
Please note that Box 2B Fit is now on a Monday
after school – starting on Monday 29th February.
If you have a child in Class 3 who would like to
attend, please complete the slip below.
Please contact the school office as soon as
possible if your child is unable to attend an after
school activity.
