For the first time ever, Iowa Lakes Community College will take its full women’s golf team to the NJCAA National Tournament this year after the team won the Region XI Tournament Saturday afternoon at Brooks National Golf Club in Okoboji. The Laker women who are headed to Daytona Beach in May include: sophomores Ricca Soper, Estherville; Abby Hohensee, Pocahontas; and April Wolf, Algona; and freshmen Katie Heddinger, Emmetsburg; and Lauren Hartman, Northwood Kenseth. The fourth place player Friday – Kaitie Meyer of Iowa Western – played consistently in Saturday’s action and took first place in the individual standings for the two-day tourney with a 160 score. Ricca Soper of Iowa Lakes remained in second place with a total score of 161. Friday’s individual leader, Sam Pingel of DMACC, slipped back into third place ending with a 163. Two other Lakers made the top 10 – April Wolf, 164; and Katie Heddinger, 172. Wrapping up the top individuals – and also going to the national tournament – were Candace Harless, Iowa Western, 165; Brittany O’Brien, NIACC, 166; Madi Fischels, DMACC, 168; Michelle Pals, Iowa Central, 168; Andrea Richter, Iowa Western, 173; and, Carla Koch, Ellsworth, 173. The Lakers shot a team score of 674; followed by the Iowa Western team with a 683; dmacc with 692; NIACC with 780; and Scott Community College with an 875 team score. In addition to those in the top five team scores, players from Ellsworth and Iowa Central competed. “One thing that stuck out with this group (of players for Iowa Lakes) is they had outstanding support from their families,” said Iowa Lakes Head Coach Dan Soper. “We came a long way from the beginning of the season. A week or so ago, their scores came down. This is a team success. It’s going to be a great memory for all of them.” The NJCAA National Tournament will be held on the LPGA International Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. The national tournament will be held May 18 - 21. Golf is open to both men and women at Iowa Lakes Community College.
