All members of the LeadershipTeam have been trained in the use of Restorative Practice techniques. These techniques are used to support children with their behaviour. Restorative Practice is a way of dealing with challenging behaviour and conflict. It focuses on building and repairing relationships rather than managing and controlling behaviour. It is about asking the following questions: What happened? What were you thinking? How did you feel? Who else has been affected? What do you need to do? If your child has been involved in a restorative circle, a letter will be sent home with your child to notify you of this. As a staff we feel GREAT TO BE GREEN, as part of a whole school positive approach, will be a huge success in encouraging the best behaviour from all pupils in our school. We hope that parents/carers will support the hard work we do to encourage good behaviour in our school. Yours sincerely, Mrs Margo Thomson Head Teacher Pupils at Robert Owen Memorial Primary School and Nursery Class are encouraged to strive for good work and good behaviour throughout the school. To ensure pupils have every chance of achieving this goal, we have revised our Promoting Positive Behaviour system which, after consultation, will be called ‘GREAT TO BE GREEN’. As with everything we do in school; the success of this approach depends very much on support from parents/carers. I hope that this booklet will help you understand how the approach is used and will enable you to support and encourage your child’s good behaviour at school. The first steps were taken when children discussed school behaviour with their teachers. As Robert Owen Memorial Primary School and Nursery Class are working towards a ‘Making Rights Real’ award, each class have a Class Charter based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Class Charters set out the basic requirements for a safe learning environment. It is hoped that we will work together to create a whole school charter by the end of the session. Staying “GREEN” all day means that the class charter has not been breached that day. The aim is for all children to try to stay “GREEN” every day, all week, every week, all term, all session. Each day your child stays on green he/she will be rewarded with 5 minutes towards FOCUS on FUN on a Friday afternoon. This amounts to 25 minutes per week. To give the children a half hour session, the children will be given 5 minutes for displaying good behaviour at assembly each week. If your child has chosen to follow the class charter, he/she will indicate this in the diary each day using a green marker. Good behaviour will be rewarded weekly at our FOCUS on FUN session. If a child breaches the Class Charter he/she will be given warnings and will lose some rewards. This will be recorded in the Homework Dairy daily. FOCUS on FUN is a half hour of structured activities offered by the teachers. It will take place after lunchtime on a Friday. Each Monday morning, the children will choose which activity they want to do at FOCUS on FUN and will work towards gaining time for it every day. If there is a day your child has not maintained GREEN status he/she will miss 5 minutes of FOCUS on FUN. He/she will spend this 5 minutes with a member of the Leadership Team, at the start of FOCUS on FUN, reflecting on what happened and how he/she will ensure they will be able to participate in the full session the following week. At the end of each term we will celebrate good behaviour with a special event called the ‘TERMTACULAR’. Your child will be invited to the TERMTACULAR if he /she stays on GREEN the specified number of weeks that term. There will also be an assembly of achievement at the end of each term and the children who have stayed on GREEN every day for the whole term will be given a special GREEN certificate and will be given first choice of activities at the TERMTACULAR. Throughout the term, children also have the chance to gain personal points and rewards in their class. This promotes drive and enthusiasm throughout the whole class, helping children to try hard to improve their work and behaviour. Staff at the school will help and encourage children to follow the Class Charters. Teachers have explained to all children what will happen if they breach the Charters. 1. When a child receives a verbal warning, he/she is being told formally, that he/she is breaching the Class Charter. He/she will be given a reminder card which will be placed on his/her desk as a reminder to make correct choices of behaviour. This allows the pupil another chance to improve his/her behaviour without losing any rewards. 2. If a child continues to make wrong choices with regards to his/her behaviour, he/she will be moved to AMBER and will lose green status for that day and also will not get 5 minutes towards FOCUS on FUN. A Reflection Sheet will also be completed and sent home to be signed. 3. If a child continues to make wrong choices with regards to his/her behaviour, he/she will move to RED, lose his/her GREEN status for that day and be sent to a member of the Leadership Team. Parents will be informed at this stage. * There is also an exceptional step, which is referred to as a serious clause which is used for unacceptable, dangerous or outrageous behaviour. The children decided the following behaviour would warrant a serious clause – fighting, pushing, kicking, punching, stealing, swearing, the use of inappropriate language, lying and spitting. A serious clause gives an immediate RED status without going through the other warnings. This is for the safety and wellbeing of all pupils and staff.
