FACE TO FACE: DRAWING & PRINTING PORTRAITS
LIZ CHISHOLM
In this course you will move from drawing to printmaking
using your own unique face as inspiration! Through relief
printmaking and drawing techniques, you will make five
individual self-portraits while exploring different themes and
ideas in each version. In addition to learning the basics of
printmaking with linoleum, you will strengthen your
understanding of facial features, drawing skills, and fun mixed
media techniques.
ABSTRACT BODY BUILDING: SCULPTURE FOUNDATIONS |
JULIA KLEIN
This is not an exercise class! Throughout history, artists have
used the body as subject matter for sculpture. Instead of
focusing on realistic sculptures, this course will explore some
of the countless other ways that artists create abstract
sculptures that viewers still recognize as bodies. Using
materials like wire, tape, glue and Sculptamold (similar to
plaster and papier-mâché) you will learn to construct
sculptural bodies. You will learn everything you need to
create a sculpture that references a body in your own unique
way.
SOUP’S ON! CERAMIC FOUNDATIONS | CHRISTINE DEVRIES
In this class you will make realistic sculptures of your favorite
foods out of clay. You will learn to use texture, color and
shape to fool the eye and make art that looks good enough to
eat! This is a great class for anyone interested in Pop Art,
hand building with clay, and sculpture.
CINEMATIC PHOTOGRAPHS: DIGITAL PHOTO FOUNDATIONS
JUSTIN SCHMITZ
Using inspiration from movies, paintings, and your own life,
you will learn what it takes to plan, shoot and edit a series of
fabulous digital photos. We will use cinematic lighting (like
the movies!) and create characters, backstories and plots.
You'll be involved in every step, and even star in some of your
classmate’s photographs. Bring your imagination and learn
all the steps needed to create professional, exciting
photographs.
UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL: DARKROOM PHOTO
FOUNDATIONS | PHIL DEMBINSKI
It's time to take a closer look at our world! This class will
teach you the basics of black and white film photography
while focusing on objects around us. We will explore a
variety of neighborhoods and textures of the summer
including the beach, the loop, and Grant Park. Still-lives of
fruit, flowers or household objects will also provide additional
artistic options. You will learn how to make pin-hole
negatives, expose black and white film, operate a 35mm
manual camera, print in the darkroom, and most importantly,
appreciate the small things in life!
SESSION I EVENING: 4:30 – 7:00PM
SESSION II AFTERNOON: 1:00 - 3:30PM
HEADS UP! PAINTING & SCULPTING PORTRAITS
HILARY BALDWIN
From Mount Rushmore to Easter Island, this course will
examine images and sculptures of the human head
throughout history and the world to inspire your own
abstract and representational works of art. Through drawing,
painting, collaging and sculpting a life-sized head, you will
learn mixed-media portraiture! This is a great class for
anyone who wants to focus on heads and faces in their own
artwork!
SCULPTING BOOKS: AN EXPLORATION IN INSPIRATION
JAMIE THOME
Celebrate someone important to you with a beautiful
sculpture! This course will show you how to turn a book into
a unique art piece, representing someone who gives you
creative inspiration. You will use techniques such as
assemblage and mixed media collage, and learn about the
tradition of artist books. You will also take a field trip to Open
Books for ideas and to gather materials.
MAKING PHOTOGRAPHY’S OPTICAL TOYS | HUI-MIN TSEN
In this course you will use modern digital technology to
experience the wonder of old-fashioned optical toys such as
thaumatropes and tunnel books! You will learn to use a
digital camera, edit and print your original photos, and
transform them into unique, 3D artifacts and toys. This
course is great for anyone interested in exploring the
possibilities of digital photography with collage.
SESSION II MORNING: 9:30 - NOON
BRIDGE IT! SCULPTURE AND INSTALLATION FOUNDATIONS
GWEN TERRY
How can a sculpture be suspended in space and appear to
defy gravity? In this course, you will explore the roles of
structure, stability, and physical balance while learning to
build cantilever structures. We will tackle mechanical and
technical challenges while also discovering opportunities for
self-expression. After a series of individual projects designed
to hone your construction skills, we will work together as a
class to build and install a large suspension bridge sculpture
right in the Marwen gallery!
ONE DOLLAR OR LESS: STILL LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY
LISA LINDVAY
You don’t need a lot of money to create interesting, exciting
artwork! Using objects that cost a dollar or less, you will
transform everyday materials into still lives and digital
photographs. In this course you will learn a variety of
photographic techniques such as how to skillfully operate a
digital camera, use both natural and artificial light sources,
construct a still life, and edit your images in Adobe Lightroom.
If you like photography and shopping in the dollar section this
is the perfect course for you!
THE ART OF MAKING COMICS: DIGITAL DESIGN
FOUNDATIONS | DAVID DOWNS
Comic books are an exciting way to bring together visual
ideas and written language. In this course you will develop
basic and advanced techniques for creating your own comics.
You will first develop drawing and design skills to create
sequential comic pages and then color and enhance your
images using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. The
end result will be a professionally printed comic book
displaying the work, ideas, and talents of the entire class.
MASTERS IN GLASS: THE ART OF MOSAICS
FRANCINE GOURGECHON
Welcome to the wonderful world of glass mosaics! Mosaics
are works of art assembled with the use of many small pieces
of glass and tile to create a larger design. In this course you
will learn the craft of mosaic construction, find inspiration in
the paintings of master artists, and translate that work of art
into your own elegant mosaic.
MAGICAL MYSTERIOUS ME: ROTOSCOPING ANIMATION
JESSE AVINA
Learn how to animate in Adobe Photoshop using the
Rotoscope technique. You will learn how to operate a video
camera and edit a short video of yourself performing a
fantastical task. Next, you will use Adobe Photoshop to draw,
manipulate, and alter each frame of your video, inventing
new actions and landscapes to digitally enhance your videos.
The final step will be to chose and edit sound effects.
SESSION II EVENING: 4:30 – 7:00PM
SPEED DRAWING | KEATON BELL
Learn to draw quick portraits of people on the street!

operates is key. In this introductory drawing course, you will
draw both nude and clothed models from observation.
Anatomical structure will be discussed during each class with
drawing exercises that will focus on body systems, such as the
skeleton, musculature, heads, hands and feet, etc.

Artists approach video games as a medium for self-expression
and examining the status quo. In this course you’ll play games
by artists who have pushed the boundaries of the discipline
such as Zach Gage, Yoko Ono, Molleindustria, Tale of Tales, and
others. Using Photoshop and JavaScript, you’ll learn how to
graphically design and code web games while also learning
about game mechanics, system design, social/activist games
and critical play. By the end of the term you’ll see video games
