Photosynthesis and Respiration

Photosynthesis and
Respiration
Cell Processes and Energy
Photosynthesis
 Formula:
– 6CO2 + 6H2O
C6H12O6 + 6O2
– 6 Carbon Dioxide + 6 Water
Glucose + 6 Oxygen
 Photosynthesis MAKES Food (glucose)
 Occurs in the chloroplasts in plant cells
Photosynthesis
 Glucose is then USED by all organisms
(including plants) to make ENERGY
 Sunlight energy is converted into Chemical
Energy (in the glucose)
 Thus the sun provides the energy source for
life on earth, via the process of
photosynthesis
Cellular Respiration
 Formula:
– C6H12O6 + 6O2
– Glucose + 6 Oxygen
6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP (energy)
6 Carbon Dioxide + 6 Water + ATP
 Cellular Respiration makes ENERGY (ATP)
 Occurs in the mitochondria in eukaryotic
cells
Photosynthesis and Cellular
Respiration
 Note that the cycles are related:
+ Light Energy
+ ATP
