Kickin’ Childhood Hunger: The Purpose Can we assume that you know when you will be eating your next meal? Can you imagine not knowing when that meal will take place once you leave your desk? If it were a Friday afternoon and you weren’t sure you’d eat until Monday when you came back to work, that would be very frightening. Unfortunately, Friday is a frightening day for many children in North Central Oklahoma as food may be scarce or absent in their home over the weekend. We wish we could tell you this was only written to capture your attention. However, this is a stark fact that was recently reviewed by representatives from Kicker, Forman Harley-Davidson, Wheeldock, Oklahoma Closing & Title and Thunder Roads Magazine OK/AR. The facts were astonishing as we learned the numbers of children from the Stillwater school system who receive assistance through weekend food sacks during the school year. Our group sat silently listening to the director of the local children’s food program describe how she and a small team of volunteers supply up to 250 sacks of food for kids in need every week. Sadly, that is only the number for children in the Elementary, Early Headstart and Childhood Development in Stillwater. An additional non-profit group supply food sacks to the middle school children. Each sack in both groups are funded completely through donations. Glenna, the director of the program for the younger children, said, “It’s challenging to supply the children with nutritional basics which can be eaten, without preparation, on our budget.” She looked around the table and finished with, “but somehow we do it.” She went on to explain that the sacks contain items such as: 4 pudding cups, cereal bars, a vegetable cup, 8 oz entrée, fruit/applesauce cups, crackers, raisins, etc. Nearly 5,000 food items are needed each and every month. She added that her goal for this year is to be able to add fresh fruit in each sack. The shopping, storing, preparing and packaging is done by unpaid volunteers. In 2014, an estimated $45,000 will be spent to supply these food sacks for the elementary and Pre-K group alone. The number and distribution of sacks is determined by the teachers in the schools. As we all sat motionless listening to these numbers and facts, our passion to feed more children in North Central Oklahoma grew greatly. We are asking for your help in funding the growth of this program and others like it. On the following pages, you will find several levels of sponsorship. Our hope is that no child will have to go hungry in the near future. Please take time to consider the following request to sponsor Kickin’ Childhood Hunger, an event August 23, 2014.
