Laboratory Equipment and Safety

Beaker
 Used to measure
large quantities of
liquids
 Read at eye level
and at the bottom of
the meniscus
What is a meniscus?
 The line formed by a
liquid in glassware
 The wider the glassware
the thinner the meniscus
 Read liquid levels from
the bottom of the
meniscus
Graduated Cylinder
 Used to measure small
quantities of liquids
 Used when quantities
need to be precise
 Read at eye level and at
the bottom of the
meniscus
Volumetric Flask
 Used when reactants
must be measured
extremely precisely
 Add solid reactant first
then fill to the line with
liquid reactant
 Read at eye level and at
the bottom of the
meniscus
Erlenmeyer Flask
 Used for carrying out experiment
 Never used for measuring liquids
 Never fill more than half way
Test Tube/Test Tube Rack
 Used to conduct an
experiment using small
quantities of reactants
 Are to remain in the test
tube rack during
experimentation
Triple Beam Balance
 Used to mass solid reactants
 Must be tarred prior to use
 Always use weigh paper; never place reactants
directly on the plate
Hot Plate
 Used to heat liquids
 Never fill glassware more
than half way when
heating
 If a solid needs to be heated…
 Heat water in a large beaker
 Place the solid in a test tube
 Place the test tube in the
large beaker
Microscope
 Used to look at very
small objects
Laboratory Attire
 All students must wear:
 Goggles
 Apron
 Gloves
 All long hair or loose clothing must be secured prior
to the start of lab
Safety Equipment
 Emergency shower
 Used if chemicals get on large portions of your skin or
clothing
 Eye wash station
 Used if chemicals get into your eyes
 Hold eyes open in stream of water until otherwise
instructed by the teacher or nurse
 First aid cabinet
 Contains basic first aid supplies for minor injuries
Safety Equipment (cont’d)
 Fire extinguisher
 Used to put out fires on objects, not people
 To use:



Pull the pin
Aim nozzle at the base of the fire
Squeeze the handle
Important Notes
 Always inform a teacher of an injury or accident
immediately
 Allow the teachers to perform any necessary first
aid
 In the event of an emergency, follow all directions
the first time they are given
