Allusion & Symbol Notes

Allusion
Everyman – an old play by this same title (with an unknown author)
featured a man named “Everyman” – he stood for all men and continues
to do so today when this allusion is made. By extension, when the term is
used today, it is applied to ALL humans, of both genders.
Application:
Bella laughed in derision, “Ah, Tony, you are not Everyman, you are a
nobody. None of your friends are looking for you – those guys learned
long ago to be good listeners and honest about their feelings. Certainly
the horde of old girlfriends is not worried about you; they have moved on
to those honest, good listeners, the Everyman-type, the ones who can be
trusted. Through your Don Juan antics, you proved yourself to be a liar
and a thief of hearts. It took time, but people saw through you. Ironically,
you were merciless to all those little girls with broken hearts, but now you
want mercy. Hah.”
Symbol
Eye - the process of seeing through the eyes is symbolic of intelligence. It
also represents a spiritual act and indicates understanding. The Egyptians
use the eye as a symbol in their hieroglyphics. (There are times when the
eye can be viewed as evil or destructive, but in general, intelligence and
understanding are suggested by the use of this symbol.)
Application:
Bella continued, “You thought you were getting away with the lies and
the cheating, but I saw you, Tony and my eyes taught me to be wise. My
eyes watched your every move and your cunning ways. I witnessed the
cruelty you visited upon those unsuspecting Cindys, Sarahs, and Sally’s.
These hazel orbs which attracted you to me to begin with, observed you.
Do you know what I think, Tony? I think you’re weak and insecure, you
certainly are not my dream guy. So, I’m going to release you, but then
I’m going to watch you, watch your every move and if you lie to another
girl, I’ll know it.” So, go on, it’s Halloween Eve.
