TITLE OF THE GOOD PRACTICE:
Junior Energy Auditors, Actions of Sustainable Energy : Energy Consumption Reduction and Use of Renewable Energy Sources through the training of High School Students.
CONTEXT FOR THE ACTION
Problems addressed
Action addresses the low public awareness identified in the energy aspects of buildings ,especially when the
building area is participating with more than 40% in the total gross energy consumption. Municipality of Hersonissos is committed to the targets of the Covenant of Mayors initiative, therefore it has issued the action of Junior Energy Auditor on its High Schools so that to educate, train and mostly aware the youngest in the battle
against climate change starting from the basics of the buildings' energy behaviour and subsequently the users'
energy behaviour.
Strategic and programmatic framework (Covenant of Mayors, Medeea, laws, etc.)
The action is implemented under the Framework of Covenant of Mayors as a measure of public awareness and
especially of young people which will comprise the next generation.
OBJETIVES
The Objective of the Action is Students from Hersonissos Municipality Area High Schools (5 High Schools) to be
trained by Official Energy Auditors in the methodology and the fundamentals of an Energy Audit. Doing so, the
student will evaluate the energy behaviour of their school building , of the City Library, of the Town Hall and
propose interventions of energy efficiency and RES measures for improving their energy characteristics.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND METHOD FOR IMPLEMENTATION
Description and Technical Conditions Needed (know-how, competences, human resources, equipment, ...)
Since the action was agreed to be implemented by the "Energy Team" of the Municipality of Hersonissos, in accordance
with the Hersonissos High Schools, taking into consideration the highly interest shown by students and teachers of the
school , the conditions needed for the implementation were:
The technical background of the trainers which have to cover not only energy audit knowledge but also transmissibility experience, especially to young students.
The availability of the trainers which have to come twice a week at five high schools of Hersonisos for the training
The availability of basic energy audit equipment such as thermal cameras, exhaust analyser, etc for demonstration in
class of their basic operation and usage
The availability of public buildings (starting from the school) for practical training of the students in real conditions,
where under the supervision of the energy auditors, take real measurements and data needed for completing an
energy audit.
The availability of PCs for the use of computerised data (Excel format) for assessing the audit data and presenting
their final results.
Duration and main steps for implementation
Duration of the Action is the second semester of each schooling year. The Action started at the school year of 2011—
2012 and it is continued in every school year since.
The main steps for implementation include:
Collecting the necessary number of Students which applied for the Action in each School
Collecting the Energy Auditors team which will perform the students' training.
Organisation of the training Schedule including the import of additional hours in the daily curriculum of the students
Covering in the hours of study energy audit principles such as:
Heat Transfer and the Energy Flows of a Building
Building Components of Examination During an Audit
Data Needed (measured and calculated)
The Basic Formulas used for calculations
Results produced and presented
Practical training in real conditions and environment of public buildings where students team up for executing an
energy audit
Proposing energy efficiency and RES measures for the improvement of the energy behaviour of the public buildings
examined.
Regulatory and legal framework
The Action is covered under the regulatory and legal framework of the Hersonissos Municipality Action Plan for energy
efficiency, which is a municipal document dedicated to the Covenant of Mayors initiative.
RESULTS AND PROSPECTS
Results and outputs (energy/CO2 emissions saving, economic saving, social benefits, added values,..)
The explicit results of the action in terms of energy/CO2 emissions savings are not visible immediately, as it needs years to
form an energy and environmental behaviour to the youth which will lead to reduction of energy and CO2. However, the
action builds and has high impact on values of efficiency, of waste reduction, of proper use of energy especially in the context of a building. Moreover, the young student's knowledge will be disseminated in their family, raising the awareness on a
bigger scale of population.
Difficulties faced and solutions
The difficulties faced has to do with :
Keeping the interest of the students high during the whole Action
The Students not to face the Action as a typical school homework
The build—up of a weekly programme without interruptions and gaps
The availability of the PC equipment and the software needed for the class
The availability of public buildings as the Town Hall and the Library for the practical training of the Students
The Solutions applied were:
Interactive method of teaching and training the students through Internet and software applications
Splitting the students' class into teams that deal with a real building example, different from their classmates
Devotion of the Energy Auditors trainers, the schools' teachers and the students to the programme schedule
Use of the Schools' PC room where the software provided by the Energy Auditors trainers
Municipality's effort to make the buildings available to the students for their practical training
Evaluation and possible improvements
Making the Action viable for more years in Hersnonissos' High Schools and repeatable to other Municipalities of Crete
Ensuring a fund for implementing the action including the Auditors' payment, software and equipment buying in order
the Action not to be dependant in volunteering and good will.
Making the Action more attractive so that more students to participate, with the introduction of more interactive sessions.
