Preface
The idea of launching the Sharjah Sustainability Award (SSA) arose in response to the vision of
H.H Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah, about
the importance of protecting the wild life and its biodiversity in Sharjah. So, the environmental
awareness programs in schools are considered as one of the important programs in the scheme of
the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPPA) that aims at sustainability through preserving
wild life biodiversity. It also represents one of key awareness means in the process of expanding the
circle of the target social groups, to enable EPPA achieve its goals aimed at preserving the
environment and biodiversity. The significance of promoting the concept of green schools lies in the
mounting of global concern about the harmful impacts of climate change and global warming, and in
engaging and inspiring all schools’ students under the supervision of their departments and teachers
to develop their perceptions of projects, ideas and independent activities to improve and upgrade their
schools to the rank of green schools and its environmental specifications.

Objectives
To,
1. Entrench the principles of sustainable development in the education sector of schools and
universities, as one of the most important and largest constituent sectors of the society.
2. Activate the environmental education role and its significance in working towards achieving the
goals of sustainable development in schools and universities.
3. Mainstreaming the environmental culture concept amongst various sectors of students in all
schools and universities.
4. Foster the sense of social environmental responsibility among students through assigning a key
role for them in implementing the award project.
5. Activate schools’ activities that aimed at excellence in the environmental field through
stimulating the spirit of competition among schools, universities and personnel to create and
implement sustainable environmental solutions to protect the environment natural resources.
6. Activate the efforts of spreading the culture of green economy and proper sound relationship
with the environment natural systems by schools, universities and community.

 Students of intermediate (Gr. 6-9) and secondary level in the:

Government and private schools of Sharjah, middle & eastern regions.

Special Needs Centres of Sharjah, middle & eastern regions.
 Faculty and administrative staff in the government & private schools, and Special Needs
Centers.
Award Specifications

An appreciation specific standard award that is granted to students, members of faculty and
administrative staff with innovative and outstanding environmental projects that meet the
criteria and conditions of the award.

The primary focus of the award is to design and apply a sustainable environmental project in
one of the award domains that aimed at contributing to the consolidation of the green economy
principles and sustainable development in Sharjah.

The winner will be granted a cash prize, the SSA trophy and a certificate of excellence.

The non-winners will be granted participation certificates.

General Terms & Conditions
1. The participant should be one of the award target groups.
2. The chosen domain project should not already been participating in it in other awards before.
3. The school can participate in two different domains provided the category for each domain is
different from the other.
4. The participation form should be filled in with the required information and sent on or before
Thursday 13th of October 2016 (deadline for participation).
5. The mentioned award and domain in the participating form will be considered as final and will
not be changed after the form submission to EPAA.
6. The submitted project should be in the framework of the overall award objectives.
7. The projects that are being offered to win the prize should abide by the project’s domain
conditions and criteria.
8. The participant (s) should submit the descriptive file of his project on or before the deadline.
9. The winner undertakes to implement the project on the ground within one to two months after
winning the prize.
10. The winner should submit a plan for the development of his project that includes a range of
Performance indicators for the continuity of the project based on the award criteria.
11. The winners agree to publish and circulate their winning project to others through a written
Description to appear on the EPPA website.
12. The Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA), the official award organizer, is not
Obliged to refund the winning projects.

First Domain
Rationalization of water and electric energy consumption.
Category 1
:
Outstanding School's Award
Description :
The best school that shows excellence in designing a model of an innovative environmental
project to save the consumption of both water and electric energy in the school.
1. The participated school or center undertakes that the chosen project has
never participated in other awards before.
Essential Conditions
2. The project will be excluded from the prize in case of discovering other
previous Awards project participation.
3. The participation form must be officially approved and signed by the
principal of the school or center.
4. The participation form and a brief description of the project’s idea must
be submitted on or before (Thursday 13th of October 2016).
5. The project’s model idea must be closely related to the rationalization of both
water and electric energy.
6. The school must abide by the terms and criteria that are specified for the
rationalization domain and category.
7. The project's descriptive file must be submitted on or before Thursday 9th of
March 2017, (submission deadline).
8. In case of winning, the cash prize and trophy will be granted to the principal
of school or center.
9. The winning school or center undertakes that the project will be implemented
on ground within one month after winning the prize.
10. The winning school should submit a developmental plan for the project within
one month.

Outstanding Coordinator's Award
Description
The best coordinator who shows excellence in designing a model of an innovative
environmental project to save the consumption of both water and electric energy in the school.
1. The coordinator should be nominated by the school principal or center from
either the teaching or administrative staff.
Essential Conditions
2. The nominated coordinator should be one of the individuals who carried out
environmental projects and initiatives and has an active role in promoting a
culture of environmental awareness in his/her school.
3. The coordinator’s participation form and the nomination reasons must be
officially approved and signed by the school principal or center.
4. The nominated coordinator undertakes that his/ her project has never
participated in other awards before.
5. The participation form and a brief description of the project’s idea must be
submitted on or before Thursday 13th of October 2016 (deadline for
participation).
6. The project’s model idea must be closely related to the rationalization of both
water and electric energy.
7. The coordinator must abide by the conditions and criteria that are specified to
the domain of rationalization.
8. The project's descriptive file must be submitted on or before Thursday 9 th of
March 2017, (submission deadline).

Category 1 :
Outstanding School's Award
Description
The best school who shows excellence in designing three innovative environmental awareness
posters aimed at highlighting the landmarks and aesthetics of the mountain environment and
ways of protecting it through highlighting different aspects of sound environmental behavior.
1. The participated school or center undertakes that the chosen theme of
their project has never participated in other awards before.
2. The project will be excluded from the prize in case of discovering other
previous awards project participation.
Essential Conditions

principal of the school or center.
4. The participation form and a brief description of the posters' idea
must be submitted on or before the participation deadline (Thursday
13th of October 2016).
5. The designed posters must abide by the conditions, criteria that are
specified for the posters domain project.
6. Three posters should be designed on the main theme of the posters
design domain.
7. The size of each poster must be A1 that is 84.1 cm in length and 59.4
in width.
8. The posters which its size does not match the required size will be
excluded.
9. One of the following design programs can be used to design the 3
posters that are; Photoshop, In-Design or Illustrator.
10. The source of the original design file must be submitted in case of using
the Photoshop design program or Illustrator program.
11. The project's descriptive file must be submitted on or before Thursday

Description

The best team of students who shows excellence in designing three innovative environmental

environmental behavior.

participated in other awards before.
3. The participation form and the reasons of nominating the team must be
officially approved and signed by the school principal or center.
4. The participation form and a brief description of the posters' idea
must be submitted on or before the participation deadline (Thursday
13th of October 2016).
5. The designed posters must abide by the conditions, criteria that are
specified for the posters' domain project.
6. Three posters should be designed on the main theme of the posters
design domain.
7. The size of each poster must be A1 that is 84.1 cm in length and 59.4

Fourth Domain
Photography on the theme of the theme of highlighting the aesthetics of sustainable
wild plants – Al-Gaff trees and the importance of protecting it from logging.
Category : Outstanding Student's Award
Description:
Essential Conditions
The best student who shows excellence and innovation in producing unique expressive photos that
highlights the aesthetics of sustainable wild plants – Al-Gaff trees and the importance of protecting
it from logging.
1. The student must be one of the award target group (Gr.6 – Gr.1 2).
2. The participated student should be a gifted one in the field photography.
3. The student should submit official approval letters from each of the
school’s principal, classroom teacher, and a letter of consent from his/her
parent for the award entry.
4. The participation form must be submitted with a high quality photo of the
participated student on or before the participation deadline (Thursday
13th of October 2016).
5. Three photos in the format of (JPG) should be designed on the required
theme of the photography domain.
6. The size of each photo must be A3 that is 42.0 cm in length, and 29.7 cm
in width.
7. The 3 photos must be closely related to the specified theme in content and
must abide by the conditions, criteria that are specified for the photography
domain.
8. It is not allowed to use the cell phone (Mobile) to produce the photos.
9. The printed photos on paper or other materials will not be accepted.
10. The photos witch its size does not match the required size will be
excluded.
11. The photos witch its content does not match the required theme will be
excluded.
12. The student undertakes that the photographs are his ownership and
he/she bears full responsibility for accountability.

Fifth Domain
The Production of an Environmental Short film (10 min) on the theme of highlighting
the manifestations and green behaviors of camping safely in wilderness areas.
Category : Outstanding Team's Award
Description
The best team of students who produces an innovative awareness short film (10 minutes in
length) on the theme of highlighting the manifestations and green behaviors of camping safely in
wilderness areas.
1. The deadline for sending the participation form is on or before Thursday
13th of October 2016.
2. The participation form and the nomination reasons of the team must be
officially approved and signed by the school principal or center.
3. Only six students will be accepted in the team and the nomination of them
must be approved by the principal of the school or center
Essential Conditions
4. The length of the film should be 10 minutes.
5. The film content must be closely related to the specified film theme and
must abide by the award conditions and criteria that are specified for the
film domain.
6. The film can be any type; documentary, drama, live footage, animations
or a combination of both, and should end with an awareness message
that is related to the film theme.
7. The language of the film can be in Arabic or English.
8. In case of winning the original final MP3 copy should be submitted in both
Arabic and English language.
9. The team undertakes that they are the creator of the submitted film
(music, photos, screenshots, etc.); the entry is original and owned by
team; the film is free of any claims by other parties, and in case of using
the rights of others to design the film’s content, the team must cite the
source and attaching the source approval permit.
10. The film that contains unauthorized use of content by its sources will
be excluded.
