Register your floor and save energy for the week of 23 – 29 March. We’ll read the energy meter and compare you’re floor’s average consumption to your energy saving week. 1st prize is a $500 donation to the charity of your choice. Also fair trade goodies to be won. For more details or to register email Seb Crawford. Volunteer event managers wanted Sustainability Drinks is a monthly event held on the second Wednesday of each month at the Loft bar. It’s a casual event for people working in sustainability, or looking to work in the sector, with speakers on a different sustainability topic each month. The organizers are looking for students who can help plan events and organize guest speakers. Only a few hours per month is required and the times are flexible. OTHER NEWS Renewable Energy opportunity in India Pollinate Energy is a social enterprise solving energy poverty and climate change at the same time. The program helps the urban poor in India ‘leapfrog’ to clean and affordable technology, like solar lights and improved cookstoves. Students from UTS can help train local entrepreneurs to sell and distribute the products. The ‘pollinator’ then runs a longlasting business in their local communities to reach more people. UTS GREEN NUGGET...did you know... Battery Recycling UTS recycles approximately 300 KGs of batteries each year, helping to keep toxic chemicals and heavy metals out of landfill. You can drop off batteries for recycling in the recycling tubes around campus, usually located in the foyer of each building. New tubes have recently been installed in the new Science, Engineering and Business buildings. See the full list of locations. GREEN HERO UTS Student’s Enviro Collective Anna Jane Linke or AJ to those who know her is a third year communications student with a keen interest in sustainability. She is an active member of Responsible Runners, a group that organises regular beach runs collecting litter along the way. On campus, AJ is the coconvenor of the UTS Students Association Enviro Collective a group of students working on waste reduction, climate change and other issues. ‘At the moment we’re working on the national divestment campaign, to get more universities to commit to withdrawing all investment in fossil fuels. And this semester a few of us want to run a reuseable cup campaign, encouraging more students and staff to take their own cup to cafes on campus, and to move away from a reliance on singleuse plastics.’ The Enviro Collective meets from 12 noon to 1 pm on Monday’s in the backroom of the Student's Association and anyone is welcome to come along.
