SOLAR RESOURCES AND CARBON FOOTPRINT OF
PHOTOVOLTAIC POWER IN DIFFERENT REGIONS IN EUROPE

ABSTRACT: The 2011 world average carbon footprint of PV system manufacturing is estimated as 1798 kg CO2eq/kWp using technology shares (multi, mono, film Si, CdTe, CIGS) as weighting factors. The electricity mixes of all
production countries of poly-Si, wafer, cell and modules was taken into account. New yearly irradiation data (kWh/m2)
and PV energy output (kWh/kWp) are calculated for different regions in Europe on NUTS level 1 and 2 for horizontal,
optimum and vertical angle. The world average carbon footprint of PV electricity generation is estimated as 55 g CO2eq/kWh with cumulative installations as weighting factors. Lowest value of 38 g CO2-eq/kWh is for Cyprus which has a
high irradiation and the highest value of 89 g CO2-eq/kWh is for Iceland which has a low irradiation. It is assumed that
the PV modules are installed at optimal angle to the sun and end-of-life treatment is excluded. The majority of countries
can decrease the greenhouse gas emission of electricity generation by increasing the share of photovoltaics.

INTRODUCTION
The 5th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) [1] states that 1)
continued emissions of greenhouse gases will cause
further warming and changes in all components of the
climate system and 2) limiting climate change will
require substantial and sustained reductions of
greenhouse gas emissions. This raises the question
whether photovoltaics could contribute to decreasing the
life-cycle greenhouse gas emission (carbon footprint) of
electricity generation. In other words: What is the
mitigation potential of photovoltaics?
In this paper we will estimate carbon footprint of PV
electricity for different countries and several regions in
Europe. First we determine the life-cycle world average
carbon footprint of PV systems (in kg CO2-eq/kWp).
Combined with regional specific data for irradiation (in
kWh/m2.year) and cumulative installations (MWp) we
calculate the world average carbon footprint of PV (g
CO2-eq/kWh).
Country average irradiation levels
have been
published [2-4] but since there is often a large regional
variation of this irradiation this paper presents new
irradiation data for different regions in Europe on NUTS
(Nomenclature des unités territoriales statistiques,
Nomenclature of Units for Territorial Statistics) level 1
and 2 for horizontal, optimum and vertical angle of the
installed PV module.

CARBON FOOTPRINT OF MANUFACTURING
The carbon footprint of photovoltaic system
production (kg CO2-eq/kWp), status 2011, is calculated
using Life Cycle Assessment and based on data collected
by SmartGreenScans [5,6] and auxiliary data from the
ecoinvent 2.2 database. It is assumed that all potent
greenhouse gases like NF3, SF6 and CF4 are properly
abated in the case they are used in manufacturing.
Reliable information on the use and direct emission of
these gases is missing. End-of-life treatment is excluded.
For the electricity mixes used at the manufacturing sites
we used the electricity mix of the countries where the
actual production takes place (Table 1). For Balance-ofSystem components we used the unmodified ecoinvent
2.2 data. The life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions are
calculated with Simapro 7 software using the
IPCC2007GWP100a impact assessment method.
Technology market shares of mono- and
multicrystalline silicon, thin film silicon, CdTe, and
CIGS are used as weighting factors to calculate the world
average carbon footprint of PV system manufacturing per
kWp module power (Table 2): 1798 kg CO2-eq/kWp.

PV ENERGY OUTPUT
PV energy output (kWh/kWp.year) is estimated using
models of irradiation (kWh/m2.year) and the performance
of the PV system and are shown in Table 3 and 4.
Irradiation is estimated using the PVGIS solar
radiation database [2]. In most of Europe, this is based on
solar radiation estimates from satellite data, processed by
the CM SAF collaboration (www.cmsaf.eu). North of 60
degrees North the solar radiation data is a gridded dataset
interpolated from ground station data [3]. The min - area
weighted average - max irradiation values per year for
European
countries
are
1)
780-1252-1982
kWh/m2
for
horizontal,
2) 963-1463-2233 kWh/m2 for optimal angle and
3) 751-995-1331 kWh/m2 for vertical installation.
PV performance is calculated using a model for the
PV power as a function of irradiance and temperature [7].
The modules are assumed to use crystalline silicon solar
cells. The balance-of-system energy losses are assumed
to be 10%. The min – area weighted average – max PV
energy output values per year for European countries are
1) 630-995-1532 kWh/kWp for horizontal,
2) 767-1163-1724 kWh/kWp for optimum angle,
3) 611-798-1025 kWh/kWp for vertical installation.
However, the calculation of the world average carbon
footprint is based on a performance ratio of 0.75, power
degradation of 0.23% per year and lifetime of 30 years
for all technologies and all countries since detailed
calculation of PV performance outside Europe is missing.
Irradiation and PV energy output are calculated for
horizontal-, optimum- and vertical angle of the PV
module and for regions in Europe classified according to
NUTS levels 1 and 2. The complete Excel file is
available for download [8].
For other countries area-weighted irradiation data are
taken from Breyer [4].

CUMULATIVE INSTALLATIONS
Cumulative installation for the year 2013 are taken
from EPIA [9] and IEA PVPS [10]. Data for regions in
Europe are available for EPIA members.

AVERAGE CARBON FOOTPRINT PER REGION
Per region the average carbon footprint is calculated
using the cumulative installation per region as weighting
factors (Table 5). The carbon footprint of the country
electricity production mixes (excluding import of
electricity) are shown as well and provide the mitigation
potential of photovoltaics.

CONCLUSIONS
The world average carbon footprint is estimated as
55 g CO2-eq/kWh with the lowest value of 38 g CO2eq/kWh for Cyprus which has a high irradiation and the
highest value of 89 g CO2-eq/kWh for Iceland which has
a low irradiation. Assumed is that the PV modules are
installed at optimal angle to the sun and end-of-life
treatment is excluded. The majority of countries can
decrease the greenhouse gas emission of electricity
generation by increasing the share of photovoltaics.
