Flow of Electricity
Everything around us is made up of atoms. When electrons travel from one atom to another, that’s electricity!
Some materials allow electrons to flow more easily. These are called conductors. Good conductors are
most metals such as copper, aluminum, and water. Insulators resist the flow of electricity. Materials such as
plastic, glass, dry wood and rubber do not encourage the flow of electrons.
Electricity will always look for a path to ground. The human body is made up of 70 per cent water, which
will conduct electricity. If you touch electricity, it will flow through you.
Insulators also help protect people from electricity. Power lines use insulators so electricity cannot travel
from the line (which uses a metal conductor) through the pole or tower to ground. Electrical cords you use in
your home have a protective covering which acts as an insulator. If the cord becomes damaged, the exposed
wire could shock you if you touch it.
Remember to always respect electricity. Keep a safe distance and stay safe.
