The Expression of
Cognitive Categories
William B. McGregor (Ed.)
Human thought and action is fundamentally shaped by
a small set of cognitive categories, such as time, space,
causality, or possession. It is not surprising, therefore,
that all natural languages have developed many devices
to express these categories. Temporality, for example,
is reflected in the lexical meaning of verbs, in grammatical marking of tense and aspect, in time adverbials,
in special particles, and in the application of discourse
principles. Many of these devices have been the subject
of intensive research across languages; but as a rule, this
research focuses on particular aspects, it does not look
at the expression of such a category as a whole, which is
precisely the aim of the present series. The short volumes
will bring together what is known about the expression of
a particular category in human language.

Cognitive Linguistics
[ACL]
René Dirven (Honorary Ed.)
The series Applications of Cognitive Linguistics (ACL)
welcomes book proposals from any domain where the
theoretical insights developed in Cognitive Linguistics
(CL) have been fruitfully applied. In the past twenty
years, the CL movement has articulated a rich and
satisfying view of language around a small number of
foundational principles. Taken together, these principles
provide researchers in different academic fields such as
descriptive linguistics, language acquisition/pedagogy,
cultural linguistics, and computational linguistics with a
powerful theoretical framework.

“This volume, one in a series of applications of cognitive linguistics, revolves around the importance of figurative thought and linguistic iconicity for vocabulary
acquisition. Being mainly devoted to phraseology, it is
an important contribution to an area in need of attention. For this reason alone, it is a useful resource for
SLA researchers, in particular for those involved in the
training of language teachers.”

Cognitive Linguistics Research offers a forum for
the presentation of research within the perspective of
cognitive linguistics. This rubric subsumes a variety of
concerns and broadly compatible theoretical approaches
that have a common basic outlook: that language is an
integral facet of cognition which reflects the interaction of
social, cultural, psychological, communicative and functional considerations, and which can only be understood
in the context of a realistic view of acquisition, cognitive
development and mental processing.

“Ronald W. Langacker is universally acclaimed as
one of the founding fathers of the cognitive linguistics
movement. His pioneering efforts towards developing a
meaning-oriented, usage-based theory of grammar have
given cognitive linguistics many of its key concepts,
and his theory of Cognitive Grammar is not only one
of the cornerstones of cognitive linguistics, it is also a
magnificent achievement in its own right.”

Grammar and
Conceptualization
Concept, Image,
and Symbol
Grammar and Conceptualization documents some major
developments in the theory of cognitive grammar during
the last decade. By further articulating the framework and
showing its application to numerous domains of linguistic
structure, this book substantiates the claim that lexicon,
morphology, and syntax form a gradation consisting
of assemblies of symbolic structures (form-meaning
pairings).

The Cognitive Basis of Grammar
This classic research monograph develops and illustrates
the theory of linguistic structure, known as Cognitive
Grammar, and applies it to representative phenomena in
English and other languages. Cognitive grammar views
language as an integral facet of cognition and claims that
grammatical structure cannot be understood or revealingly
described independently of semantic considerations. It
argues that grammar forms a continuum with the lexicon
and is reducible to symbolic relationships (i.e. form-meaning pairings), and consequently that all valid grammatical
constructs have some kind of conceptual import.

one of the basic concepts of Cognitive Linguistics, like
conceptual metaphor, image schemas, mental spaces,
construction grammar, prototypicality and radial sets. The
introductory purposes of the collection are supported by
an introduction to the theory and, specifically, the practice
of Cognitive Linguistics and by trajectories for further
reading that start out from the individual chapters.

This volume is the first one to illuminate diverse aspects
of word formation from cognitive perspectives. Guided
by methodological pluralism, the contributions shed light
on a variety of issues in word formation theory and on
the interfaces between word formation and phraseology,
phonology, and inflection. The majority of the studies
focuses on individual types of word formation, reframing
our understanding of these processes. Overall, the various
contributions add to a yet marginal body of research
in cognitive word formation and advance our awareness about the benefits of applying cognitive linguistic
thoughts for investigating processes of lexical creation.

Speech, Memory,
and Meaning
Intertextuality in Everyday Language
The book introduces the concept of intertextual memory
into the domain of linguistic theory. All new facts of
speech are grounded in the speakers’ memory of previous
experiences of using language. The new meaning is
shown to be always superscribed on the familiar and
recognizable, as its more or less radical alteration.

Language Usage and

The volume addresses an issue hotly debated in current
linguistic theory: the relation between language usage and
language structure. The contributors represent different
theoretical positions. What they have in common is that
they recognize structure and usage as non-reducible
linguistic phenomena and take seriously the challenge to
describe the relation between them.

Expression of the Social Mind
This interdisciplinary volume provides a novel perspective on social aspects of language. It views ways of
how the acquisition and management of knowledge of

by combining the two disciplines social cognition and
linguistics, it proceeds beyond cognitive linguistics by
examining language from a wider perspective including
cultural issues.

Studies in diachronic linguistics increasingly acknowledge that linguistic change is highly context-dependent
and somehow tied to constructions as linguistic units.
This is the first volume to investigate the role of constructions and the potential of constructional approaches in linguistic change. The contributions in this volume comprise
both theoretical and empirical studies, all of which are
accessible for a general audience. While some contributions explicitly aim at comparing and unifying concepts
from both traditional grammatical theories and recent
construction grammar approaches, others offer detailed
case studies of exemplary problems from a constructional point of view. The papers offer a cross-linguistic
perspective and deal with a number of different language
families, ranging from Germanic to Austronesian.

The author argues for a new, linguistically grounded

and challenging reappraisal of CxG for the description of different areas of English grammar, including,
as rightly pointed out by the editors (p. 173), levels of
analysis often left unaccounted for by most construction grammarians, such as phonology. This collective
work offers new insights into relevant long-standing

Epistemic Meaning
A Cross-Linguistic and Cognitive Study
This book deals with epistemic expressions: the linguistic
means we have for expressing our degree of certainty
about and our type of evidence for propositions about the
world. It presents a cross-linguistic study of such expressions and demonstrates that they behave in a way that can
be described in terms of a coherent but complex meaning
domain. In order to account for this behaviour the book
proposes to analyse epistemic meaning in terms of a
coherent but complex cognitive structure which is bound
up with our cognitive capacity for relating our conception
of the world to the world.

Language Talent
and Brain Activity
Problem Solving in
a Foreign Language
This book describes and assesses pronunciation talent in
its various dimensions, such as production and perception
or the segmental and suprasegmental levels of speech.
Special focus is put on the psychological and neural
correlates of phonetic performance. Behavioral influences
such as empathy or motivation are investigated. The
resulting classification of proficiency and talent level
is used to select subjects for neuroimaging studies in
which differences in brain activity between talented and
untalented individuals are observed.
This book fills some of the major theoretical gaps for
the popular teaching form of Content and Language
Integrated Learning (CLIL). It re-examines the basis for
CLIL from a cognitive perspective and gives an overview
of the foundations of problem solving, thinking and
language processing. Besides that, it presents a study
in which the language and content-focused cognitive
processes of learners during task solving are investigated.
The data show that the use of an L2 has an impact on
conceptual thought in that it can enhance semantic
processing.

“The valuable contribution of this monograph to the
acquisition of meaning in a second language is timely
after initial experimental studies have probed both
complex semantics (e.g. Montrul and Slabakova,

Slabakova’s critical review and proposal of the Bottleneck Hypothesis will allow researchers to take stock

contribution to the field of language acquisition and
will be of significant interest to researchers and graduate students.”

A Cognitive-Semiotic Theory of
Human Communication
By integrating ideas of Peirce, Bühler, Bakhtin, Piaget
and Jakobson in this book, the author defines three linguistic supertypes each operating with either the situation
in reality, the speaker’s experience of it or his condensed
information to the hearer. The theory is built step by
step on the basis of a detailed examination of individual
languages and their relationship to perception and cognition, their representation of situations and their use in oral
and written discourse. The theory offers a completely
new understanding of language and its role in perception,
cognition and communication.

Semantics
An International Handbook of
Natural Language Meaning
This handbook comprises, in three volumes, an in-depth
presentation of the state of the art in linguistic semantics
from a wide variety of perspectives. It contains 114
articles written by leading scholars from around the
world. These articles present detailed, yet accessible,
introductions to key issues, including the analysis of
specific semantic categories and constructions, the
history of semantic research, theories and theoretical
frameworks, methodology, and relationships with related
fields; moreover, they give expert guidance on topics of
debate within the field, on the strengths and weaknesses
of existing theories, and on the likely directions for
the future development of semantic research. In many
cases, the articles written for this handbook promise to
become the standard references on the topics they cover.
This work will provide an essential reference for both
advanced students and researchers in semantics and
related fields within linguistics, psychology, philosophy,
and other areas.

Speakers tend to compose their utterances in such a
way that the message they want to get across is hardly
ever fully encoded by the meanings of the words and
the grammar they use. Instead speakers rely on hearers
adding conceptual and emotive content while interpreting
the contextually appropriate meanings and intentions
behind utterances. This insight, which is of course
particularly relevant in all kinds of indirect, figurative or
humorous talk, lies at the heart of the linguistic discipline
of pragmatics. If pragmatics is the study of meaning-incontext, then cognitive pragmatics can be broadly defined
as encompassing the study of the cognitive principles
and processes involved in the construal of meaning-incontext. This volume is the first to systematically survey
this terrain from a wide range of perspectives. It collects
state-of-the-art contributions by leading experts from the
fields of pragmatics, psycholinguistics, cognitive linguistics, clinical linguistics and historical linguistics.
