Welcome to our 1st addition of the GSA monthly newsletter!! We hope that you enjoy the read

Latest from the GSA Coaching Department:
The kidz have settled in well and our Dolphins Kidz cricket program is being well received by the
kidz and coaches alike. The basics have been taught this month, such as fielding, throwing,
catching etc. next month’s emphasise is on batting, bowling and game play. We have noticed a
lot of kidz not wearing adequate sun protection and ask the parents to please either pack sun
cream or a hat for the kidz to wear. The coaches will question the kidz weekly on various sporting
topics, therefore please encourage your kidz to watch sport and help out where you can. Please
feel free to ask the coaches for advice on various sport coaching related topics that you would
possible like to help your child at home with!!

Nutrition Tip & Information:
Did you know that the body needs carbohydrates during exercise?
Carbohydrate is the most important source of energy for athletes. It does not matter what sport
you play or how old you are, carbohydrates provide the energy that fuels muscle contractions.
Eating enough carbohydrates before, during and after exercise prevents protein or muscles to be
broken down and used as energy. Carbohydrate is lastly the main fuel for your central nervous
system (CNS) and brain.
How can you make sure you eat enough carbohydrates for exercise?



Eat a low GI meal containing starches 1-2 hours before exercise e.g. Peanut butter
sandwich, pasta with lean mince, chicken breast and potatoes, Future life Smart food.
Energy stores get depleted in 30-45minutes-when you are exercising for more than that, fuel
up with foods that give you fast acting energy banana, Future life High Energy bar, jelly
sweets or energade.
Make sure after training that you include carbohydrates again to replace the energy
stores.
o Directly after training- take in something that gives you fast acting energy e.g.
banana, Future life High Energy bar, jelly sweets or energade.
o Make sure that you eat a meal containing carbohydrates e.g. lunch- sandwich or
dinner- spaghetti bolognaise
Training Tip & Information:
When you catch a ball of any kind you need to ensure your eyes are open and focusing on the
ball. You need to have your hands out in front of your chest so that a target can be made. When
you catch the ball your body needs to be underneath it and once you have closed your
hands/arms around it, it must be brought to your chest for extra security. When you throw a cricket
ball you need to turn your body side on and point with your hand and shoulder that is not holding
the ball. When you throw the ball you should take a step which will give you more power and the
ball should pass your ear for better accuracy.
