Thursday, March 7 Friday, March 8 February 1, 2013 Dear Seacrest Parents, The first of February is here and in ten days or so we will be about halfway through winter. Seems weird to think of it that way. Where I grew up, and most of us grew up, this is early summer weather at worst. It was one degree above zero in Minneapolis yesterday, and I’m not missing that! Today I am off campus with 18 other Seacrest folks on a strategic planning retreat. Our task is to create a vision for Seacrest five years hence, and develop a one-year action plan by May. This planning process and retreat have been in the works since September and you might remember my letter announcing the formation of the Planning Group a few weeks back. The group is made up of trustees, administrators, faculty, parents, and a few close friends who are setting aside time in the next few months on behalf of Seacrest. I want to thank them in advance for their time and talent in service to the future of all our children. We have several interesting events coming up before I write you again. Saturday, February 9 is a big day! The Jack Hartmann concert (for children ages 3-10) will open up our campus to the greater Naples community for a morning of music and fun. Following the concert, we will have action-packed, hands-on activities in science, literacy, art, and more. Bring a friend and stay for the morning. It promises to be a wonderful event! That evening will be the first ever, and soon to be legendary, Baseball and BBQ with Buck (Showalter), Kruk (John) and Mike (Schmidt) at the Marco Island Marriott. It is the perfect evening for the avid fanatic or the casual fan who loves baseball stories and lots of laughs. I found out during the planning process that our own Seacrest parent, John Kruk, is a very funny guy! And he swears that Buck and Mike are funnier. This link http://www.seacrest.org/page.cfm?p=2079 will take you to more information and registration instructions. The high point of my day on Thursday was visiting the 3rd grade Gadgets Galore Convention in Mrs. Emerton’s and Ms. Curvin’s rooms. The number of inclined planes, pulleys, conveyors, and elevators would have made Rube Goldberg proud! Each of the kids, of course, gave me the full treatment – name, age, invention, mechanics used – followed by as many demonstrations as it took to make it work. Usually, that was just one. It was awesome, and I was impressed by the intricacy of some, and the bare-bones simplicity of others. As one inventor told me, “It could have been bigger. I wanted to see how small it could be and still work.” Enough said! With warmest regards, Please note: New Date for Cabaret Sunday, April 14, 7:00 pm D. John Watson, PhD Head of School
