Values & Behaviours Framework For Organisational Recruitment, Appraisal of Constables, and Internal Selection Processes It is now the best part of a decade since we became the first police service in the British Isles to develop a set of core values. What we did at the start was innovative and helped bring about fundamental changes in how the Constabulary goes about its business. We are an entirely different organisation than we were at the start of this work. I have no doubt at all that we are a better one, too. We have never stood still. Since the launch of the values work we have developed a set of leadership qualities, re-invigorated our behavioural work and even helped shape the code of ethics that applies by law to every police officer in England and Wales. In the pages that follow you will find a new guide to our values and behaviours. This guide gives clarity to what values and behaviours mean to all of us. They show how those values, the leadership qualities and the code of ethics all fit together. They show simply what it means to be part of this great little organisation. Gary Roberts Chief Constable 2 This, the first of two frameworks, is a tool to aid the appraisal process for Constables and recruitment and selection. The revised appraisal system calls on each of us to demonstrate the values and behaviours we use in our day to day roles. This framework gives an overview of how our identified values and behaviours relate to each other and their alignment with the organisational code of ethics. The second framework is the Leadership Qualities Framework which is used for appraisal of Sergeants, Inspectors, Chief Inspectors and officers engaged on any of the leadership pathways for promotion. Embedded within this framework are the ‘talent statements’ which are used to assess leadership potential. The Frameworks provide a common foundation for career development and assessment throughout the Isle of Man Constabulary by: Identifying the behaviours and values required in recruitment and initial student officer training Forming the basis of appraisal to be evidenced in the PDR Identifying leadership potential and evidencing leadership qualities Highlighting continual development needs Other benefits of the Frameworks include: Increased awareness of what is expected Further improvement on the quality of service Increased job satisfaction Improved qualitative productivity Ability to challenge colleagues/managers who do not follow the Framework External measures on how we perform 3 Our Core Values Challenge Service Professional Responsibility Caring Respect “Keeping People Safe” 4 Our Core Values ‘What they mean to us’ Challenge Service We serve the public and our colleagues to make a positive difference.
