Air Monitoring
Policy Statement:
1. The Susquehanna Hose Company will monitor for carbon monoxide on all structure
fires to determine when SCBA use can be discontinued.
1.1. Levels of carbon monoxide above 35 Parts Per Million (PPM) is considered an
IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health) atmosphere.
2. After extinguishment of the fire, Safety Officers will start monitoring for carbon
monoxide levels.
2.1. Safety Officers and Accountability Officers will ensure that all personnel working
and entering the IDLH atmosphere is wearing SCBA and on air.
2.2. Safety Officers will keep Command and Operations up to date on the carbon
monoxide levels as well as all other Officers.
2.3. The Safety Officers will do this via radio to ensure all personnel are aware of the
levels of carbon monoxide and protection.
2.4. Personnel not wearing SCBA and breathing air in an IDLH atmosphere will be
asked to go on air or leave the structure.
2.5. Safety Officers and any other fire line Officer have the authority to remove any
personnel refusing to abide by this SOG.
3. Safety Officers shall report to Command and Operations immediately any personnel
refusing to do so.
3.1. Any mutual aid company refusing to abide by this SOG will be released from the
scene.
3.2. This SOG is for the safety and well being of all members of the Susquehanna
Hose Company and its surrounding mutual aid companies.
