DIVISION OF LIBRARY SERVICES
Getting started with
Academia.edu
Setting up an Academia.edu account
1. Go to www.academia.edu
2. Type in your first name, last name, e-mail address and choose a password
3. Press Sign up
4. You will be emailed a confirmation email to confirm your email address
5. The next page will present you with a list of publications accessible online which
Academia.edu believes you may have written. Select either Yes or No for each item on
the list to indicate whether you are the author. Those you select Yes for will be
automatically added to your profile (and you may be asked to upload the papers: be sure
that you have the copyright permissions if you intend to upload and share your papers).
Either select Skip this step or, if you choose to add some, Save and continue once you
are finished.
6. Enter your University & Registration details (NB be careful to choose the correct
version of “Charles Sturt University” from the options.)
7. Press Save and continue
8. Enter your main research interests and select Add after each one. You can always add
or remove these later.
9. Press Save and continue
10. You’ll be asked if you have a Google Scholar profile, here you can add the URL for
your profile page, if you don’t know it, you can search for it.
11. Press Save and continue
12. You can add the URL of your website – this could be a page from your School’s
website, or your own Blog site
13. Decide if you want to connect your Academia.edu profile to your Facebook profile.
This will automatically connect you to any of your Facebook friends who use the service
(and have chosen to connect in this way). If you want to connect, click Find Facebook
friends and follow on screen instructions. If not select I don’t have a Facebook
account at the bottom right of the grey box.
14. The same process applies to searching for contacts from your e-mail account that
use Academia.edu. This only works for some e-mail services (e.g. GMail) and it doesn’t
work for your CSU e-mail address. Either enter account details or select Skip this step
15. This will fully log you into the service for the first time. It is designed to be intuitive
(and to be resemble Facebook) so take a few minutes to explore and get a sense for how
it works.
Expanding your Academia.edu profile
1. When you’re in Academia.edu, click on your name at the top right of the screen
2. On the side menu, select Edit next to the Profiles option. Here you can Add or edit
any web pages or profiles you may have, including Google Scholar, Facebook, Twitter
etc. Click on Add when you’re done.
3. The menu bar on the left selects different sections of your profile: about, books,
papers, talks etc. Start by filling in the basic details for About: a short summary about
yourself and the address of your blog. (NB if you want to blog anonymously then maybe
skip this!)
4. When you have finished, select Save and view page.
5. You can Add papers and enter the details. If you want to upload a copy of the paper
then select Choose a file and follow the onscreen instructions.
6. When you have finished, select Save
7. Repeat the process for your CV (Add CV) and any other content you wish to add to
your profile.
