The reason for this is that we all want to achieve “greatness” in our lives. But believe it or not, Jesus wants us all to achieve greatness—but greatness in a very different way. My dear friends, Jesus’ greatness has three big challenges: if you want to be great… then you must first put yourself last, secondly, you must be the servant of all, and thirdly you must receive the poor and the needy with great love. This is what it means to be great and to follow Jesus. Being great means making Jesus and his way of life the model and pattern of our lives. We should not strive to get ahead of one another, be superior to others or to outdo one another. He wants us to serve one another… to be servants of all… without any desire for a reward. We also need to understand that, in order to be true Disciples of Christ, we must empty ourselves of all those things that keep us from the love of Christ. We must become just like that child that Jesus embraced in our Gospel today. A child that is always dependent on the father. Yes, our Gospel today reminds us of the dangers of ambition, greed and positions of power. That is why Jesus placed a child to stand in our midst to show us what true greatness is all about, because a child is powerless and his/her greatness comes from their obedience to their father or mother. Just like Jesus’ greatness has nothing to do with his power but through his willingness to do the will of his Father. As he said in the Gospel of John, “I came down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of my father.” This weekend, Christ is reminding us that “true greatness” is to be like Jesus who valued himself not because of his authority and power, but because of his willingness to do the will of God, including dying in the cross. True greatness for Christ is to be like a child, always dependent on his father and lastly, true greatness for Christ does not mean honor, position or prestige, but putting yourself last and be servant to all. God resists the proud, but give grace to the humble. Fr. September 20, 2015 Page 4-565 The Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 9: 30-37 More than any of the other Gospel writers, Mark shows us how human, and sometimes even how dense, the disciples are. They don’t—or won’t understand what Jesus means about having to suffer and die, instead arguing about who among them is the greatest. Sometimes in the Church we too get caught up in useless arguments about things that are ultimately of little importance. Let us listen to Jesus’ words today to reset our priorities.
