Street lighting has a range of applications varying
from improving traffic safety on motorways, for example,
to contributing to the quality of life in residential
neighbourhoods. Reducing power consumption is
playing an increasingly important role. This brochure
will give you an idea of Luminaid’s range of products
for illuminating our streets at night and contributing
to these objectives.

LED - the new generation
sustainable street lighting
A revolution is on the way. Light-emitting diode (LED) lighting is winning ground on our streets. The high
pressure sodium lamp, which dominated the night with its reddish yellow glow for decades, now has a
worthy successor.
It is a fully-fledged alternative with better properties and
it is called LED. In fact, LED lighting is considerably better
at approximating the quality of daylight and combines this
with the low consumption properties of the familiar high
pressure sodium lamp. Furthermore, LED street lighting
achieves full brightness immediately. LEDs are efficient and
easy to adjust. They are environmentally friendly and
have an exceptionally long life cycle. And all this with a
power consumption which is significantly lower than that
of conventional street lighting.
The new generation street lighting
Initially, LEDs were primarily used as device indicator lamps.
Applications for decorative use followed shortly afterwards,
but the real breakthrough came with the emergence of
white LED lighting. Since then, LEDs have developed at an
incredible pace and LED street lighting has now become a
fully-fledged alternative to conventional street lighting.
The new generation street lighting now produces a clear,
pleasant white light with a consistently high quality,
brightness and intensity. Moreover, LED street lighting
achieves full brightness immediately, even at low
temperatures, which means that it has a shorter start-up
time and can, therefore, be switched on later.
Sustainability
LED street lighting can be completely recycled and does not
leave any chemical waste. But sustainability means more
than just saving power or minimising the environmental
impact; sustainability also entails a long life cycle and low
running costs. Saving power has always been one of the
most important reasons for the use of high pressure sodium
lamps. Luminaid LED street lighting is, however, even more
economical because the same amount of light is produced
with less power. Furthermore, white light is perceived as
being brighter than yellow light, so that a lower light level
suffices than when the traditional yellow light is used.

Save on power
Substantial savings can be realised with both existing and
new light systems. Lamps with a lower wattage can be
used, existing systems can be mounted at lower heights
and light points in new systems can be placed at greater
distances from one another. These improvements result in
enormous overall savings on running costs. Energy costs
may even be halved, a significant factor in times such
as these.
Save on maintenance
In addition to lower power consumption, LED street lighting
also has an exceptionally long life cycle, which naturally
has a positive effect on replacement and maintenance
costs. After all, the light sources seldom have to be replaced
and their maintenance is limited to cleaning. This reduces
the running costs as well as the volume of waste.
Total cost of ownership
Luminaid would be happy to calculate the total cost
of ownership for you. We take the life cycle, power
consumption and maintenance into account, as well as
the purchasing costs.Experience shows that, depending on
the number of burning hours, an investment in Luminaid
LED pays for itself relatively quickly and, in doing so, drives
down costs. What is more, an investment cannot always be
expressed in terms of financial value. An investment may be
an attractive proposition when, even at the same cost, the
light quality is improved, thus raising the general safety of
a traffic situation or residential environment.

Optimal visibility with LEDs
Street lighting has undergone considerable development over the years. Halfway through the twentieth century,
the primary reason for street lighting was to make driving in the dark less dangerous. Years later, visual
comfort also began to play an important role. And, from the 1980s, people realized that street lighting also
contributes to the safety of pedestrians. The evolution of street lighting stagnated for a long time after that
but is currently developing rapidly.
Provably SAFER
Optimal visibility contributes significantly to traffic safety.
Independent studies show that safety in traffic situations
improves if LED street lighting is used. We can, therefore,
prevent serious injuries and even reduce the number of fatal
accidents taking place by making roads and footpaths safer
with the aid of LED street lighting.
Longer reaction time thanks to
better visibility
On a road which is better lit, vehicle drivers see cyclists,
pedestrians or other moving objects approaching from a
greater distance. Since the drivers see them sooner, and thus
further away, they have more time to respond. Things work
exactly the same in reverse. Pedestrians have a better view
of the road and approaching traffic so that they are better
able to assess the situation.
VARIOUS APPLICATIONS OF STREET LIGHTING
Main roads/motorways
Main roads and motorways require functional lighting
which gives vehicle drivers the best possible view of the
road, in all weather conditions. Moreover, the long life
cycle and lower maintenance interval ensures fewer
delays and tailbacks on the roads.
Car parks
Car parks can look very desolate at night. Valuable property
is left unattended and can invite crime. Car parks require
lighting solutions which act as a deterent to criminals and
make users feel safer. LED solutions which dim when there is
no activity are the solution here.
District access roads
Roads that link districts to busy motorways or industrial
estates require different lighting solutions: solutions
which meet the requirements of both pedestrians and
vehicle drivers.
Industrial estates
There are often around-the-clock activities at industrial
complexes, production facilities and storage and transhipment yards. The activities go on non-stop and employees
have to be able to carry out their work at night, too. Good
lighting is essential in improving the efficiency and security
of these sites.
TUNNELS
Tunnels have extremely specific lighting requirements
which minimise the changing light conditions for vehicle
drivers when approaching and leaving tunnels.
Residential Areas and Cities
Lighting for residential areas ensures that people feel
secure in their living environment and helps them find
their way around the district.
PARKS AND SQUARES
Parks are designed to create pleasant spaces which improve
the quality of life of the residents of the area. The lighting
used at night is often an element of the design.

THE POSITIVE EFFECT
OF LIGHT
Because of its high light yield and relatively long life cycle, the high
pressure sodium lamp was the logical choice for lighting the streets at
night for decades. But its characteristc yellow light is unnatural and
makes it difficult to distinguish between colours. Fortunately, we no
longer have to put up with it, because there is now an alternative.
LED street lighting has many advantages over the conventional yellow light. Firstly, we
perceive our environment as bright and natural as a result of the white light. There is less
dazzle so that the environment looks more peaceful and attractive. This may all seem rather
exaggerated, but architects consider lighting as one of the most important elements in
creating liveable, appealing public spaces and with good reason.

Feeling safe
Light has a positive effect on the liveliness of a street. If people are at ease in a street, they
will enter the street in question more frequently. The general social control increases and
consequently crime and vandalism decreases. A great many people feel uncomfortable
walking down poorly lit streets. It is almost stating the obvious to say that better lighting
can play a big role here.
Luminaid’s LED street lighting is very bright and has a superior colour rendition, making it
easier to distinguish between faces, objects, shapes and other details, even from a greater
distance. So good street lighting ensures not only that people are more relaxed on the
streets but helps fight crime, as well. The fact that people can recognise faces and other
details more easily deters criminals and results in clearer images on, for example,
surveillance camera tapes.

Luminaid Light solutions
Our LED street lighting is used in residential areas, along connecting and
main roads, in parks and in car parks. Luminaid light solutions are easy
to maintain and have a better energy efficiency than conventional
street lighting.
Much LED street lighting is built up of countless tiny LEDs with a lens.
This often leads to annoying glare which can, in turn, cause dangerous
situations. Luminaid has developed special optics with larger light sources,
resulting in better distribution of the light on the street.
Since all of our street lighting is equipped with a glass cover, it does not
yellow, become dirty or age, as is frequently the case with the usual plastic
covers. The glass cover is easy to keep clean and contributes to a higher
light transmission.

GY 500LD SERIES
STREET LIGHTING
The GY500LD is a street lighting luminaire with a wide range of applications
and excellent lighting performances.
Thanks to its low power requirement, this light solution is eminently suitable for use on
short masts and when masts are close together, as is often seen in residential areas.
The light-duty versions of the GY500LD are best used in applications in which a relatively
low light intensity is required, such as in parks and car parks. Various mast fittings are
available for the GY500LD and it can, therefore, be used on various mast diameters.

The GY7636LD is a heavier-duty street lighting luminaire with a broad range of
applications in situations in which taller masts are used or in which the masts are
relatively far apart.
The optical cover glass of the GY7636LD has a convex surface resulting in a broader
emission of light. If the luminaire is installed on a taller mast or the distances between the
masts are increased, the great diversity of wattages means that it is possible to guarantee
the required light levels at the same light intensity in various situations on a continual basis.
The GY7636LD has special cooling fins for better heat dissipation and the power supply
and optical compartment are installed separately. As a result of its universal mast mounting
bracket, the GY7636LD is suitable for various mast diameters.

The GY9946LD is one of the heaviest-duty street lighting luminaires in Luminaid’s
range and it is used on motorways and industrial estates and in various other
applications which require maximum light intensities and in which extremely
strict requirements must be met in order to guarantee security and visibility.
The glass cover of the GY9946LD has a convex surface resulting in a broader emission
of light. Luminaid delivers the GY9946LD in various wattages so that the same light
intensities can be achieved in different situations by varying the mast heights and the
distances between them. The special cooling fins ensure better heat dissipation and the
power supply and the optical compartment are installed in separated sealed compartments.
As a result of its universal mast mounting bracket, the GY9946LD is suitable for various mast
diameters.

TUNNEL LIGHTING
Solutions for dynamic
light conditions
Whereas street lighting is usually used when night falls,
lighting solutions for tunnels are also used during the day.
The problems entailed require completely different solutions.
The primary objective of tunnel lighting is to get traffic through
the tunnel safely, preferably without disturbing the flow of the
traffic. Vehicle drivers must, therefore, be able to adjust rapidly to
the changing light conditions. During the day, the contrast between
the daylight and the dark in the tunnel has to be minimised and
during the night, the reverse applies.
It is even more important that the light solutions used for tunnels
are highly reliable and have a long life cycle than those used for
public roads. Maintenance on these light systems must be kept to
a minimum because it can lead to considerable traffic nuisance
with far-reaching consequences. What is more, power consumption
also plays an important role here, as the lighting is used
24 hours a day.

The GY822SD is a ceiling luminaire with a wide range of applications in tunnels
and other underground situations which require a constant level of lighting.
The GY822SD is an excellent lighting luminaire for tunnels. Since it is used as line lighting
in the ceiling, the succession of luminaires follows the route of the tunnel. The result is a
continuous visual unity which has a restful effect on the human eye and which ensures
that vehicle drivers can get used to the changing light conditions more easily.
Since there is a dimming option available with the GY822SD, this luminaire is suitable for
various underground applications. It is, furthermore, possible to have the light intensity of
each luminaire rise gradually so that the lighting level increases naturally as you drive
further into the tunnel and then fall so that the light intensity decreases as you drive out of
the tunnel. This also enables drivers’ eyes to adjust better. The GY822SD is available in two
different wattages.

The GY370TSD is a lighting luminaire for underground situations in which optimal
accessibility is a primary requirement, as well as an excellent lighting level.
The multifunctional features of the GY370TSD make this luminaire an underground light
solution with an exceptionally wide range of applications. The luminaire is mounted on
the wall at an adjustable angle of around fifty degrees and is available in various wattages.
The individual luminaires can be mounted closer to one another or further away, depending
on the required level of lighting.
Since the luminaires are mounted separately from one another, the nuisance caused during
maintenance and replacement activities is minimised. The GY370TSD is the ideal luminaire
for locations which must be accessible at all times. The GY370TSD meets the extremely strict
requirements laid down for lighting railway tunnels and high-speed train lines.
