We pray together. We play together. We learn together.
9th October 2015
Dear Parents/Carers,
This week has been jam packed with Autumnal activities, we have been
thinking about the changes that we see and the different signs we can look
out for when looking for Autumn. It is also National Poetry week this week, so
the children have learnt and performed an Autumn poem. This was shared with
the rest of the school in assembly today! They all did very well!
Literacy
This week we have been learning about the season of Autumn. The children
have been hearing and learning Autumn poems and songs. We have used
information books to find out about the signs of Autumn and we have been
looking around school to see if we can see the Autumn colours in the trees. We
have also explored the story ‘Pumpkin soup’, completing a big draw today with
this book in mind.
We have also been learning songs, poems and nursery rhymes about Autumn
which I have included with this letter. The children have enjoyed a poem
called ‘Paint box’. This poem talks about all the different colours of Autumn.
Below are links to some songs that you child might want to watch at home:

Letters and Sounds
In Letters and Sounds we have continued to listen for words that start with
the same sound. We have been listening for initial sounds in words and trying
to find things that begin with the same sounds. They are becoming more
familiar with alliteration and hearing the initial sounds. They have also been
playing games on www.phonicsplay.co.uk and Education City, which you can
access at home. The children have been playing on the phase 1 level in letters
and sounds.
Maths
In Maths we have been talking about and learning all about shapes. The
children can identify lots of 2D shapes and can tell you how many sides and
corners they have. This weekend I would like them to go on a shape hunt and
look out for shapes around the house or if you go to the park or to the
supermarket encourage them to find them and talk about their properties. I
would appreciate it if you and/or you child could take a photo of any you find
and send them via 2simple. You may want to create a pic collage to fit in more
photographs. Anything you do at home will be added to your child’s learning
journey.
Come and See
We have started the topic of ‘Welcome’ this week. We have welcomed each
other to the Holy Family family and spent time meeting staff members and
other pupils. Some of the children took pictures that we have displayed in our
come and see area. Next week we will be talking about baptism. It would be
great if you could send in any pictures of your children being baptised, this
would be a lovely thing to talk about with the children these can also be
displayed on our come and see wall.
Spooky Disco
The spooky disco this year will be on Thursday 22tnd October 4:00pm-5:30pm.
Tickets for this are limited, Reception children usually love this event, so
make sure you get your tickets early.
Reading Meeting
After half term I will be introducing the children to Phase 2 of Letters and Sounds.
As we move into this new phase, I would like to invite you to a meeting to discuss how
I will be teaching the children and how you can support them. This meeting will be on
Monday 30th November at 9am.
Christmas trip
We will be inviting the children to visit Cronton Garden Centre after the reading
meeting on Monday 30th November to pick a Christmas tree. More information
regarding this will be in next week’s newsletter.
Thank you and have a lovely weekend and don’t forget to share your weekend
