INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Step.1 Remove your existing Speedometer. Most will have a bracket on the back similar to the one on Precision Star. Simply remove the two nuts to release the bracket and pull the speedometer out. Remove the Pitot Tube from the old one and clamp the tube well so it cannot leak. Remove any old wiring including the light bulb from the old unit. (It is not required) Step.2 Install the Precision Star in the dash and secure using the bracket and nuts. Step.3 Wiring – Install the color coded wires as follows. You can use the supplied “ring terminals” or you can “splice” or “butt splice” the wires based on your boat wiring. Ensure the wires are securely attached. RED- The RED wire must be connected to a continuous 12v source. This could be secured to the Red wire off the ignition post or some other suitable source. (Red wires in a boat supply continuous voltage) PURPLE – This wire requires a switched 12v source. Most boats will have a Purple wire at the ignition terminal and at the back of your gauges if they are powered when key is turned on. (Purple in a boat represents a switched source) BLACK – This must be connected to any suitable Ground location. Testing Turn key on and Precision Star should immediately light up and show speed as 00. Upon initial start up, if the unit has a clear view of the sky (outdoors) it will take on average less than 4 minutes or so to gain a “Fix” in your area. (When the time solidly appears on the screen the GPS has gained a “Fix”). Future starts will take just seconds to gain a “Fix”. If a fix is not made in 5 minutes, re-power and try again. User Guide - 5HZ Clock Compass INITIAL START UP / GENERAL INFORMATION As soon as your new speedometer is connected to 12 volts and you turn the key on it will come alive. The very first time you power up your new speedometer it will take several minutes to search and gain a “fix” on the satellites in your area. Once the GPS gets a “fix” the time will appear on the screen and it is ready to go. (There is no calibration required) Each time the boat key is turned off and then restarted the GPS “fix” may take a few seconds. If the boat is stored in a garage or has not been used for a period of time, it may take several minutes to get a new “fix” once you arrive at the lake. Main Screen Upon initial start up, the screen will default to the main screen format shown above and will display in MPH. If you prefer the measurement of speed out to the 1/10, press the SELECT KEY. There are four versions of the main screen format. Press Select Key to cycle through the different versions. PEAK SPEED This feature will constantly look for the latest “peak speed” of the boat and will date stamp the reading. Press MENU & SELECT together to reset to 0. Q&A / Trouble Shooting Q. When I store my boat during the week in my garage it can take several minutes searching for satellites right after I launch the boat. Why is this? A. Even when the boat key is OFF, Precision Star remains powered at a very low level and continuously monitors the GPS coordinates for a fast “fix” once you turn the boat on. If it has been stored in an area without a clear view of the sky, it is like restarting for the first time. Once the “fix” has been made, future key off & key on cycles during the day should result in immediate “GPS Fix.” Q. Often when the boat is sitting still, the speed will suddenly show a few mph. A. This is not abnormal, it is simply satellite scatter. Once the boat is moving the speed and direction will become very accurate. Q. The screen message is “GPS Module Problem, No Communication”. A. Try powering down your main battery switch (if you have one) or totally power down the red and purple wires on Precision Star. A complete power down may reboot the unit. Q. Every time I turn the boat off and restart it a few minutes later the speedometer searches for a “fix” for several minutes. A. Check the red 12v wire on the Precision Star harness. This MUST be connected to a continuous 12v power source in the dash. The Red Wire near the ignition post is a good source. (The Red Wire keeps the GPS part of the unit powered at a low level). You may also wish to check the 5 amp in line fuse on the red wire. Q. Screen gets dark in the bright sun and is difficult to read. A. Check contrast and lower if necessary. 3 is normal for most conditions. Q. At night, the screen lighting is very bright. A. Lower the backlight setting. 0 is off and 7 is very bright. Q. There appears to be no power to the speedometer. A. Check power connections and in line fuses. The fuses are 5 amp, 1.25 inch. The purple wire is key, it must have 10.5+ volts or display will not start. If display has no backlight and does not start, check voltage on this wire.
