Course Description
This course focuses on developing advanced skills for managing enterprise networks including deploying an active
directory infrastructure, administering an e-mail server and designing a secure network. Students will broaden their
technical skills in order to remain creative and innovative in exploring possible solutions to a task, by getting
exposure to other areas of technology such as web, databases, programming and emerging technologies, depending
on current market needs. Through strategic business writing, career planning and researching the hidden job
market, students will develop the career communication skills necessary to take advantage of the present
opportunities in the industry.
Course Learning Outcomes/Competencies
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Produce an effective cover letter;
2. Design an active directory infrastructure that meets the information technology needs of an organization;
3. Install, configure, and troubleshoot Windows directory services components including DNS, Active Directory
and security solutions;
4. Manage, monitor, and optimize the network environment through the use of Group Policy objects;
5. Through a hands-on project, setup and configure Active Directory, and File and Print services ina virtualized
environment;
6. Develop advanced problem solving skills through exploration of technologies other than networking;
7. Analyze business organizational structure to design system architecture solutions;
8. Work at the Linux command line and perform easy maintenance tasks, plus install and configure a
workstation and connect it to a LAN, or a stand-alone PC via modem to the Internet;
9. Develop a security plan for an enterprise network;
10. Identify common network vulnerabilities and the industry practices used to mitigate them.

Evaluation
This course can be awarded a satisfactory (S) grade or unsatisfactory (U) grade, at the conclusion of studies.
In order to acquire a satisfactory grade (S), a student must attain a minimum of 65% weighted average for all the
modules listed below. Modules are evaluated through a variety of activities including quizzes, projects and handson exams. Students are assessed both on their individual work and on their team work. For details on a particular

Attendance/Illness:
In case of illness or other an avoidable cause of absence, the student must communicate as soon as possible with
his/her instructor or program head of Chief Instructor, indicating the reason for the absence. Prolonged illness of
three or more consecutive days must have a BCIT medical certificate sent to the department. Excessive absence

Attempts:
Students must successfully complete a course within a maximum of three attempts at the course. Students with two
attempts in a single course will be allowed to repeat the course only upon special written permission from the
Associate Dean. Students who have not successfully completed a course within three attempts will not be eligible to
graduate from their respective program.
