2010 Missouri Show Me Summit on Aging and Health Focuses on
Changing Face of Aging
Jefferson City, MO, September 29: The Changing Face of Aging will be the focus of the 2010 Missouri Show Me
Summit on Aging and Health on October 18-20 at the Hilton Branson Convention Center in Branson, Missouri.
Sponsored by the Missouri Association of Area Agencies on Aging (MA4) in collaboration with the Missouri
Department of Health and Senior Services, the fourth annual summit is the largest senior forum in Missouri,
attracting an estimated 500 participants and 60 vendors.
This year’s Show Me Summit on Aging and Health will focus on the needs of today’s seniors and address the
changing face of aging as the leading edge of baby boom generation begins to turn 65 in just two years. “The first of
the 78 million baby boomers will turn 65 in two years and by 2030, more than 20 percent of the U.S. population
will be 65 years old or older,” said Mary Schaefer, president of MA4. “The boomers have been a demographic force
since birth and they will continue to be trailblazers in their senior years. Their expectations will be dramatically
different from previous generations because they are highly educated, physically active, civically engaged and
more financially secure as a group. They are also tech savvy and voracious consumers of information. Not only do
we have to acknowledge this dramatic change in the composition and needs of older Missourians, we have to plan
for it.”
Schaefer said that the Changing Face of Aging would be the theme of MA4’s year-long public education
effort to raise awareness of the new reality of aging in Missouri and the critical services that its 10
member Area Agencies on Aging provide to seniors and care givers.

“We want Missourians to be aware of MA4’s extensive network of resources and expertise in the area of
aging and that our mission is to serve, inform and advocate for the needs of Missouri’s seniors. As a part
of this information and education campaign, we will be reaching out to Missouri seniors through our new
website, new media like Facebook and Twitter, our senior centers and networks of providers and care
givers and through newspapers, television, radio and other traditional media outlets.”
Schaefer will present her remarks on meeting the needs of Missouri’s changing aging population at the opening of
the summit at 1 p.m., Monday, October 18. She will be followed by speakers Margaret Donnelly, Director of the
Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and Judy Baker, Regional Director of the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services, who will deliver the keynote address.
Summit attendees will also be able to attend a full schedule of workshops, exhibits and events. The workshops
include presentations on the expansion of senior legal services in Missouri, the importance of independent living,
the Greenhouse Model that is transforming the long-term care environment, the aging workforce phenomenon,
advances in assistive technologies and some straightforward advice on how to get the most from a visit to the
doctor.
The Show-Me Summit on Aging and Health encourages interested senior, senior care specialists and
providers, state employees, Missouri Senior Rx advisors and Area Agency on Aging board members to
attend this important event. Also in attendance will be directors and employees of the statewide senior
centers, professionals from the In-Home Care Industry, Nursing Home Industry, Nursing Home
Administrator Industry, Hospice, Alzheimer’s and other health care organizations.

About The Missouri Association of Area Agencies on Aging (MA4)
MA4 was founded in 1973 to serve as a statewide advocate and resource for older Missourians. MA4 is comprised
of the state’s 10 Area Agencies on Aging (AAA), which were created under the 1973 amendments to the Older
American’s Act of 1965. For more than 35 years, these local agencies have been providing vital services, programs
and information to millions of Missourians and their caregivers, including legal services, nutrition, disease
prevention and health promotion, transportation, tax counseling, senior centers and in-home services. The 10 Area
Agencies on Aging (AAA) provide a coordinated network of care in implementing statewide initiatives, which are
designed to help older Missourians maintain their independence and give them a voice in articulating their
concerns and changing needs. As the official statewide association of these agencies, MA4 is dedicated to carrying
out its mission of service, information and advocacy to improve the lives of older Missourians and to plan for the
changes that will take place as the aging population grows in numbers and importance in the next decade.
