Siemens plant in Weiz delivers 4,000th power transformer In a ceremony held on the evening of April 24, 2015, the Siemens transformer plant in Weiz, Austria, celebrated the delivery of its 4,000th power transformer. The 150-ton colossus, of which the installed copper wire alone accounts for 34 tons of the total weight, was developed and manufactured for Commonwealth Edison, a longtime U.S. customer. Transformers such as this one are helping to ensure a reliable power supply around the world. The Weiz facility has been directly associated for more than 110 years with products used for efficient, sustainable power generation, transmission, and distribution. Transformers built at the plant, which is considered a major driver of the regional economy and local employment, are deployed worldwide. About 80 percent of the transformers made in Weiz are exported. Dr. Stefan Pieper, managing director of the transformer plant in Weiz, welcomed about 1,000 guests, including many employees, customer representatives, and the acting mayor of Weiz, to the facility’s high-voltage laboratory. In the meantime, the 4,000th transformer had been transported by rail to the port in Linz, on the Danube river, from where it will continue its journey to the U.S. The Siemens transformer plant in Weiz Weiz is the world’s largest facility within Siemens for developing and building transformers. In addition to Weiz, the Guangzhou, China; Junidiaí, Brazil; Mumbai, India; Zagreb, Croatia; and Nuremberg, Germany, sites are part of the factory network for Large Power Transformers (LPT). Within the network, Weiz is a center of competence for AC transformers, phase-shifting transformers, and reactors. The plant’s key products include power and distribution transformers as well as monitoring systems, all engineered with the highest development expertise and manufactured to the latest quality standards. Every year, about 4,000 distribution transformers and 140 large-scale transformers are built on the plant’s premises covering about 54,000 square meters. The 4,000th power transformer from the Siemens manufacturing plant in Weiz is a 330/138/33-kV autotransformer with a capacity of 336 MVA, and will be delivered to Commonwealth Edison, a longtime customer in the U.S. The transport weight is about 150 tons, of which the installed copper wire alone accounts for 34 tons. The dimensions are approx. 7.40 m long, 3.60 m wide, and 4.60 m high. siemens.com/energy/transformers Stefan Klaassen, head of the LPT Segment, was very pleased in light of the delivery of the celebratory transformer from Weiz: »The delivery of the 4,000th transformer from Weiz attests to the extensive experience that the entire LPT network can draw upon in the manufacture of large transformers, and underscores Siemens´ position as a leading company in the Large Power Transformers segment.« The customer: Commonwealth Edison Commonwealth Edison, known in the U.S. as »ComEd,« is the largest utility company in the State of Illinois. It supplies electricity to about 3.7 million customers in Chicago and northern Illinois. Like Siemens, ComEd can look back on a history spanning more than 100 years. The company is a subsidiary of the Exelon Corporation, one of the largest gas and electricity suppliers in the U.S. Since 1992, the Siemens plant in Weiz has delivered 30 transformers with a total capacity of 14,500 MVA to ComEd.
