Week 78 Term 2
Thursday, 19 June 2014
It’s been a big week at Tangara for sport, debating, singing, music and dance. We enjoyed some welcome sunshine at our Athletics Carnival yesterday. The students v. teachers relay was a favourite (won
by the students!). The overall House winners will be announced at the School Meeting on Friday.
We congratulate Ruby Tanna, Annabelle Woodbury and Katherine Clare who all competed at the CIS
Cross Country last week. Annabelle and Katherine will now progress at the NSW All Schools Cross
Country. An excellent result!
I was very proud to witness our Tangara Primary B team debate Wenona in the ISDA Grand Final on Friday night. They put up a valiant fight but Wenona won the debate. Our girls were gracious in defeat!
Tuesday lunch time was alive this week, with the final of Tangara’s Got Talent. Congratulations to Katie
Lang and Emma Ash in third place with some very impressive dance moves. In equal first place were
Thereza Kizana and Caitlin del Rosario, performing an original composition, and the Royal Atlantis Orchestra with a ‘mashup’ arranged by Marianne Daher.
26 June – St Josemaría’s Feast day
Everyone is welcome to St Mary’s Cathedral for a Mass in honour of St Josemaría Escrivá next Thursday
night. Another recent saint, St John Paul II, called St Josemaría the ‘Saint of Ordinary Life’. As the founder of Opus Dei – a personal prelature of the Catholic Church – St Josemaría’s message was simple, but
radical: every single person can – and should! – be holy.
Tangara was founded by a group of parents and educators. Some were faithful of the Prelature of Opus
Dei, some were not. They came together with a shared educational vision, inspired by the teachings of St
Josemaría.
St Josemaría’s ideas shape Tangara’s distinctive identity today: the conviction that genuine education
should be ‘all round’, including academic excellence and character development; the importance of oneon-one care for every student, so that education is personal; and the irreplaceable role of parents in forming their children. Today we see how the Tutorial System is fundamental to Tangara’s mission: it facilitates the holistic development of each child, as well as a close partnership between the parents and the
school. There are over 250 schools across the world like Tangara, inspired by this vision.
While always respecting freedom of conscience, Tangara students are encouraged to develop a loving
relationship with God. Discovering the Divine in daily life gives them the confidence to contemplate the
big questions and the hope that fills their journey with meaning and purpose. Our Religious Education
program gives students a solid grounding in the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church. Our
Chaplains are priests of Opus Dei, providing spiritual support and the sacraments. Religion at Tangara is
not just taught, it is lived. We hope this inspires the girls in their own lives.
Happy Holidays!
A reminder to please consider a donation to Tangara’s building fund, as the end of financial year draws
close. I wish all our families a very happy and restful Winter break. See you in Term 3!

Week 8 Motto
“Setting Great Goals for the Holidays”
As the holidays approach it is easy to sense the
growing excitement amongst the girls. How often
when asked what they will be doing in the holidays,
the ready answer is ‘nothing.’ Holidays are not a
break from all activity. Sleeping in till almost noon,
leaving my room in a mess and only doing the bare
minimum is not a holiday for those around you.
During the holidays we can exercise the virtue of
Personal Endeavour by planning to use our leisure time constructively. Good use of our time
is to live the virtue of Personal Endeavour. We need to set holiday goals and give ourselves
challenges, such as having some sort of holiday plan whether it is to plan outings or to organise what to do with our time when we are at home.
Most of all it is important to remember that holidays do not mean I leave all the everyday
work around the house to others. I can practice Personal Endeavour by doing my best to
help others and to keep the peace in my family.
Both Year 7 Deba ng
Teams won this week’s debate against Loreto Normanhurst.
Here’s a photo of the

well-deserved win.
The Primary B ISDA Team receiving certificates for representing Tangara in the
Grand Final against Wenona. We would like to commend these girls for a successful season and we thank Manon for her assistance .
Fond wishes Mary McFarlane Primary Debating Coordinator .
Year 2 have been sketching and drawing maps of our school. The girls used their maps to
make their own 3D model of Tangara. They carefully built the Year 2 classrooms, the chapel
and the Primary building. The model was then painted and detail added using textas.

A Collage of Work - 2Rust
We have a lot of fun creating while we are learning. We did
some visible thinking and are amazed at what we thought
before we started and how our thoughts changed as we go.
Our favourite routine is “Think, Pair, Share”. Most of all our
handwriting has already improved and our wrap is getting
better everyday. Mrs V and 2 Rust are having a great time.
We enjoy to flip, slide and turn our shapes. We also found
many right angles in our classroom. We just love collecting
our pink cards because we are so well behaved and we can
not wait to dip into the golden box!

Week 8
Welcome Back Mrs

We missed you!
Both Kindergarten Navy and Rust have had a very busy last few weeks of Term Two. We
celebrated both The Ascension of Jesus and Pentecost. We learnt how Jesus taught His
apostles many things a er His Resurrec on and promised to send a very special gi to
them a er He went back to Heaven to be with His Father. We learnt that the special gi
was The Holy Spirit and that Pentecost is the Birthday of the Church, which we happily
celebrated with cup cakes.

COMMUNITY SERVICE: A WORLD OF NEW EXPERIENCES
Year 11 & 12 students: Have you considered volunteering overseas?
Volunteering during your gap year or as a break during or after university allows you to explore the world as more than just a tourist. If you would like to leave your mark on a community abroad, while experiencing the adventure of a lifetime, an overseas volunteering
placement could be for you!
Help others in meaningful ways
You will have the chance to help people and communities who really need it and become
an active member of the local community.
Experience life
Taking time out to volunteer overseas provides a rare opportunity to do something completely different. It is a springboard for discovering yourself and the world and it might
even help you plan for your future.
Have an adventure
Going on an overseas volunteering placement is a real challenge. You will live and work in
a different culture, and experience life from another perspective.
Make new friends
An overseas volunteering placement is a great way to meet new
people and make new friends.
Practice a new language
The best way to improve your foreign language skills is to spend
time in the country itself, away
from your home influences. Volunteering abroad is an ideal way
improve any language skills you
may have, or even learn new
ones!
to
Experience another culture
When simply travelling between countries you rarely have time to properly learn about different ways of life. By spending several months living and working overseas, you can really experience and immerse yourself in the culture of your chosen country.
Enhance your CV
Getting in to university or finding a new job can sometimes be hard work. Having an overseas volunteering placement on your CV could make all the difference.
More information about overseas volunteering programs is available at “News and Events”
on the Community Service Portal, or visit Lattitude Global Volunteering at http://
www.lattitude.org.au/
COMMUNITY SERVICE ON-LINE!
The Community Service Portal has been up & running on the staff and student homepages this Term, and is now available on the Parents Portal. Please take a look.
The community service booklets are no longer being used. Instead, secondary students
can register for community service activities online, and keep an electronic record of
their community service hours.
To register for community service activities, the students:
click on the community service icon on the Students’ Homepage;
click on 'Volunteering Opportunities';
choose the activity in which they would like to participate, and click on it;
register their interest by completing the online form.
Once a student has registered their interest for a particular activity, they will be emailed
further details such as venues, times, dates, supervising teachers, training sessions.
Students are able to record their community service hours electronically by clicking on
the "Community Service Records" link and following the prompts. This replaces the old
booklet system for recording students' community service hours.
It is each student's responsibility to keep their record up to date by recording their community service participation on the on-line document. The information given by the student will be verified by the teacher who supervised the volunteering activity.
The data entered on a student's Community Service Record will be included in their
Term 4 School Report as well as their Year 12 School Reference.

Another hard and well fought ba le by both Tangara teams. There was no love shown from either team ,
Tangara 5 were determined to con nue their winning run , The game was played with a lot of passion and
one would have thought it was the final. Madeline Mackenzie and Caitlin Moore were unstoppable as

Score: WIN 11-17
The condi ons were awful; however, the a tude of the whole team was outstanding. The girls were on
their A game during this whole match, with the first goal being scored by Ashna within minutes of the
whistle going for the first quarter. Ashna (GA) and Anthea (GS) played a spectacular game, with some
great passes and between the two of them scoring a total of 17 goals. The team work showed by the girls
was wonderful to watch, with Sarah (C) covering the court with great enthusiasm, whilst Jasmine (WD)
and Marina (WA) were all over the court, driving forward and ensuring that they were free. Brilliant defence as always from Monica (GK) and Larissa (GD) who intercepted so many balls and defended their opponents so well. Well done girls! Thank you to all the parents who came out to support the team, especially in such horrible condi ons. Thank you to our manager Rev who kept us informed and updated with

3. How much fruit and vegetables they ate
4. How much me they spent being ac ve
5. How much me they spent watching TV/computers.
6. The amount of some mes food which is high in fat, sugar and salt.
