TITLE: USER EXPERIENCE DESIGN - INFORMATION ARCHITECT
CLASSIFICATION: INFORMATION SYSTEMS 24
JOB OVERVIEW
Designs systems that help employees, customers and other users find and manage information successfully. This position
creates the structure or map of information which allows others to find their personal paths to knowledge, helping users
formulate queries that can be matched with relevant content.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Required:

Conceptualizes and translates user requirements through designing information structures, including navigation,
work and dataflow, data categorization, labeling and searching best practices.

Researches and analyzes user behaviour, preferences, objectives and working methods to determine how users
consume content.

Plans information architecture, including evaluating information representation, studying the site concept and
strategy.

Organizes and presents data to the user in a meaningful, clear and intuitive manner whether on web sites or
other systems. Almost all IAs work on web sites (though some are working on mobile/wireless, database
systems, etc.)

Plans and implements interaction specifications, navigation rules, organization of information, and site maps.

Develops and completes usability test plans, evaluates traffic patterns, studies user feedback to validate
information delivery.

Defines standards for data integration and the creation of business object schemas or standard formats to
facilitate data exchange.

Designs innovative transaction interfaces for existing and new products and services.

Ensures data models and metadata are correct and data is cleansed for business intelligence.

Conducts market and usability studies, surveys set objectives, running test sessions and interpreting results
using mock-ups, prototypes, user flows, and detailed design specification documents to define and
communicate interface concepts and requirements.

Models architectural schema, information structure and features, functionality, and user-interface design.

Determines policies for data access and monitor data quality.

Creates and publicizes an inventory of data stores and information components.

Analyze existing web application designs, architecture and code to improve quality, mitigate issues, and improve
performance and functionality.

Evaluate business requirements to determine most appropriate technical architecture and design patterns.

Develops performance measures and evaluates the effectiveness of web services delivery and makes
recommendations for enhancements.

Plans and coordinates projects including providing direction to project teams, prepares project initiation
documents, and determines business feasibility, project plans, schedules, time frames and availability of
resources.

Develop wireframes, site maps, schematics, process maps, user-task analysis and visual specifications to
describe the optimum user experience.

Provides direction, technical expertise and advice to systems staff supporting corporate web databases and
applications.

Provides advice to executive on alternatives and solutions, risk assessment and cost benefit analysis of existing
and future information architecture.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Education or equivalent work experience in information architecture, user experience design, interaction design,
computer science, human computer interaction or a related area. Related experience depends on your
education:
o
Degree plus 2 years of related experience; or
o
Diploma or certificate plus 3 years of related experience; or
o
5 years of related experience.
Your related experience must include:
o
Minimum of 2 years of experience in information architecture or user/interface design.
o
Experience working with user interface design processes and methodology, user-centered design
principles and practices.
o
Experience facilitating and providing leadership when working with diverse groups.
o
Experience with mockup and prototyping tools like Visio, OmniGraffle, Balsamiq, Adobe Creative Suite.
o
Preference may be given to applicants that have experience in data architecture.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

Strong conceptual and strategic thinking skills.

Successful completion of security screening requirements of the BC Public Service, which may include a criminal
records check, and/or Criminal Records Review Act (CRRA) check, and/or enhanced security screening checks as
required by the ministry (Note: It is important that you read the job posting carefully to understand the
