What is an assertion/topic sentence? In outline form, your assertions (3) become the TOPIC SENTENCES for each paragraph. ASSERTION = TOPIC SENTENCE Choose a thesis/theme… • Choose your most compelling theme to work with. • In other words: Choose the one that is: – most clear – has the best examples, and/or – most interesting to you. What question can be asked? Your thesis directly answers your guiding question Thesis • Controlling statement that answers your guiding question • Details what your essay is about • All quotes and assertions support thesis Review Examples Before you begin your outline… Think through your examples. • Have you chosen the three BEST pieces of evidence to support your thesis statements? • Will you be able to support these assertions (evidence) with quotes from the text? • It is not too late to choose a different story or a different example to support your thesis. Outline Form Outline Fill in your outline in this order: 1. Thesis 2. Topic Sentences/Assertions (The statement of how each piece of evidence relates to the thesis) Example: The Aboriginal story ‘Marngit’ by Wongar provides an example of the relationship to land. Outline 1. Thesis 2. Topic Sentences(3) 3. Evidence/Explanation/Quote (for each topic sentence). Use complete sentences. 4. Conclusion 5. Introduction 6.
