Uncovering Our Talents | Self-Reflection
For 7 minutes, silently free write
whatever comes up for you:
1. What do I uniquely bring to this board?
Examples: “intuitively get strategic planning,” or “I can talk to
anyone”…
2. I’m most passionate about…
“raising my family”, or “reaching out and involving more
people,” or “my faith” or “helping/guiding others to succeed.”

here, the Japanese auto industry isn’t likely
to carve out a big slice of the U.S. market
for itself.”

TRUMP RUNS FOR SECOND TERM: WORLD HOLDS

REGULATORY DRIVERS ARE INFLUENCING UTILITY
PROGRAMS
The projected glut of
natural gas extraction in
the US means our
nation’s trend of the
lowest prices in the
world will continue for at
least the next few years
say industry experts.
Studies are showing that
the low gas prices,
leading to a plateau in
retail electricity costs,
are causing a decrease in
interest in utility energy
efficiency
programs.
Home
owners
and
businesses are choosing
to spend their money and
concern on other more
pressing needs.

UTILITIES’ RATE OF HIRING EXPANDS
EXPONENTIALLY
Following a mass exodus
from the retirement of its
aging workforce over the
past five years, utilities
are on a hiring spree. But
rather than a one for one
replacement the rapid
evolution
of
utility
business models and
expansion
into
new
service channels has
the nation’s leading
power
providers
scrambling to attract and
keep the best young
talent in the workforce.
Shifts in utility perks
now include remote
work options, on-site
yoga studios and inoffice foosball tables.

CROSS-INDUSTRY UTILITY CONSOLIDATION
ACCELERATES
For years energy and
water
utilities
have
grown closer as their
challenges
as
opportunities
increasingly overlapped.
Following the first few
joint ventures between
investor owned water and
energy utilities in 2017
the industry is seeing a
rapid expansion of out
and out mergers and
acquisitions.
What
wasn’t expected is the
increased attention and
bids for energy utilities
being made by data,
telcom and digi-com
industry leaders.

ENERGY UTILITIES BEING REDEFINED BY THE
SHARING ECONOMY
Northern Energy Co.’s
recent expansion into the
electric vehicle ride share
market may be a sign of
things to come. The
social
innovations
coming out of Silicon
Valley continue to offer
new and unforeseen
business opportunities for
energy utilities. What
started
with
a
proliferation of smart-
phone applications that
facilitated
digital
communities
owning
community solar and
wind projects is now
pushing firmly on the
utility business model.

SUPERSTORM ‘MANDY’ WIPES OUT ISLAND OF
MIAMI BEACH
Super
hurricane
‘Mandy’, in its third day
of slowly and laboriously
churning through the
Gulf of Mexico has
completely submerged
Miami Beach Island.
Scientists
say
that
amongst the damage are
the complete ruin of any
remaining sand dunes
and protective sea walls,
leaving
the
island
unrecoverable
and
uninhabitable.
In addition, rural areas
from east Mississippi to
the Southeast seaboard
remain without power as
utilities struggle to repair
the antiquated rural
electricity grid.

TESLA INSTALLS BILLIONTH POWERWALL,
COMPLETING NATIONAL STORAGE GRID
With
its
recent
installation of another
neighborhood
energy
storage
battery
in
Raleigh, North Carolina,
Tesla has reached yet
another milestone. With
this installation Tesla has
established
an
interconnected,
nationwide
energy
storage
infrastructure,
allowing residents and
businesses to store the
energy produced by their
wind turbines and solar
panels. As a result the
nation’s energy grid now
has access to a steady
supply of renewably
produced
energy,
regardless of time of day.

SE ENERGY CO. ANNOUNCES ‘FREE NIGHTS AND
WEEKENDS’ FOR CUSTOMERS
SE Energy Co. has rolled
out a ‘free nights and
weekends’ program for
any customer that installs
at least a 5kW solar array
on their property. As the
first to shift to a model
many customers are
familiar with from their
old telephone plans, SE
Energy Co. is setting a
new tone for how it will
source its energy supply.
As
residential solar
supplies
have
proliferated SE Energy
Co. sees an opportunity
to purchase enough
energy
from
these
distributed sources to
offset any losses through
this
new
program,
effectively incentivizing
home solar and giving
customers
increased
flexibility.

GOOGLE BUYS SOUTHEAST ENERGY CO.
Following a series of
performance issues that
included a 100 hour
blackout
of
the
southeastern U.S. as a
result of a cyber attack,
as well as rural customers
being literally left in the
dark with reliable power
available only in cities,
Google
pounced
to
purchase the largest
energy utility in the SE
for pennies on the dollar.
The
transaction
immediately makes the
already
ubiquitous
company
the
most
dominant player in the
energy industry. Google
said its first goal is to
reduce Carbon emissions
at least 50% in the region
in its first two years.
