Please provide input on any activities you would like to see planned for the club to Paula Thomson or
Glenna Day.
Please consider volunteering for a position on the board. All of the current board members have
served for at least 2 years. It would be nice to see some new faces on the board with fresh input and
ideas. A nominating committee will be formed prior to the annual meeting. If you are interested in
running for a position on the board, please let Mike Crupi know.

WE’VE BEEN PLAYING
DFW Young at Heart to Italy (August 31 – September 14) submitted by Warren Norris
Eight hearty travelers from DFW Young at Heart Ski Club spent 12 – 14 days in Italy seeing the various sights along the Cinque
Terre coastline, the Tuscany countryside, and the highlights of Rome. Our eight members (Kathy and Beach Aten, Charles and
Sandy Chapman, Maggie Phillips, Kathryn Holly, and Warren and Dianne Norris) joined 17 other TSC skiers from Austin and
Houston for this wonderful trip with our Collette Tour Manager, Marta Adamo.
We all traveled somewhat different routes to Florence, Italy, and met together at our initial destination, Sestri Lavante, on the
Northern Italian Riviera. From there, we had the first part of our journey which included the Cinque Terre (five fishing villages
along the rugged coastline on the Ligurian Sea) and the upscale seaside towns of Santa Margherita and Portofino.
After 3 wonderful days, we were off for a long bus ride to Rome to pick up 3 more tourists (a couple from Boston and lady from
Topeka, Kansas). We stayed overnight in Rome, got a quick bus tour of the highlights of Rome, and were back off to the north the
next morning. Our jaunt to discover Tuscany went by way of the medieval walled city of Assisi, the birthplace of the patron saint of
Italy, St. Francis. We continued through the rolling countryside of Tuscany, ending in the famous spa resort town of Montecatini
Terme, our home base for the next six nights.
During the next 5 days, we visited some of the major cities and sights in Tuscany, including Siena, San Gimignano, Florence
(twice), Pisa, and Lucca. We were treated to some unique and priceless treasures, such as Michelangelo’s David, the Uffizi
Museum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Pitti Palace, and a special visit to a Tuscan farm with vineyards and olive groves to learn
about wine making and the process of making Italian olive oil. At the end of our time in Tuscany, we had a local farewell dinner at
a wonderful hilltop restaurant above Montecatini Terme. By this time, we were somewhat used to having those full, four-course
Italian meals with lots of wine – after the second or third bottle our spirits were quite high.
We did have a fright when one of our travelers, Kathy Aten, had some health issues and had to spend a couple days in a local
hospital. Fortunately, she recovered enough to rejoin us at a somewhat lessened pace but was able to finish the rest of the tour.
On day 12 of the tour, we were off again back to Rome. After a long morning ride, we were in time for our tour of the Vatican
Museum and St. Peter’s Basilica, both with numerous art treasures. That evening, we were treated to our second farewell dinner
at a very nice local restaurant with great food and entertainment.
Very early the next morning (3AM to be exact), the Chapmans and the Norris’ were off to Rome for their return flight via
Amsterdam to DFW. The Atens and Maggie/Kathryn stayed on in Rome for two more days before returning to Texas.
All in all, it was a great trip – beautiful scenery, fabulous art works, magnificent cities/towns and churches, delicious food,
comfortable accomodations, and to top it off – great fellow travelers.
We need your input ! Any news you may want to share with YAHS is welcome. The
