LINK TO PHOTO GALLERY REVIEW LINK TO FLOOD RELIEF UPDATE ROTARY CLUB OF BROADBEACH INC. SCOOTER PROGRAM The Rotary Club of Broadbeach Inc. commenced their scooter program is May 1994 when then President Dick Holland was approached by Ken Allan, a Chemist, who felt the need to help one of his customers who had no cure for her debilitating medical condition. This Recipient still enjoys a club mobility scooter even today. This scooter program still operates today with a current fleet of 55 mobility scooters. The program has been efficiently run for the majority of the time by Chair Cec McPaul and his right hand man Uwe Seifert. More recently John Curr has assisted and after Cec McPaul’s well earned retirement from the Program, it is currently chaired by John Monks. The program works on the basis of a simple lease agreement to the recipient for $1 per year and a scooter is provided to the Recipient for as long as the Recipient is able to use it. Once the Recipient is unable to use this scooter, the scooter is returned to the Club where it is reallocated to another worthy person. There are stringent requirements that the Recipient must be unable to afford to purchase a scooter and the Recipient’s GP Doctor must certify that the Recipient is medically capable of handling the scooter and will benefit by the use of the scooter. The aim is for the scooters to be used to attend to local shopping, Doctors and Chemist visit etc and not to replace motor vehicles. All scooters are registered (Free registration) and fully insured by the Rotary Club of Broadbeach. Club Minders are assigned to all Recipients who are the first point of contact when the scooter needs attention. RACQ by arrangement attends to flat tyres or breakdowns. Worthy of mention is the extremely valued assistance of Ian and Annie Watt (PHF) who own Elite Scooters and Mobility for their past and ongoing support of this program and the numerous unpaid hours they spend on maintaining the club scooters. Unused scooters and parts etc are stored at our Broadbeach Rotary Hub in Ashmore which amongst other things was specifically built for this program. The Rotary Club of Burleigh has recently taken on this worthwhile Program as well and now has a fleet of 50 scooters in their community. This program is an extremely worthwhile project and we encourage other Clubs to include a similar mobility scooter program in their Club. I would be pleased to assist other Clubs set up their own scooter project and I can be contacted on 0417749554 or [email protected] John Monks Chair Scooter Project, Rotary Club of Broadbeach Inc.
