GEOGRAPHY SUMMER PROJECT
Take time to look at these three sources of information
and what they show. One of the key skills that you need
for AQA A-Level Geography is the ability to extract
information from various sources and use it directly to
help you answer questions.
-The first graph shows the rise in Carbon Dioxide in the
Earth's atmosphere. The predominant academic belief is
that is caused by man-made pollution.
-The coropleth map shows the % of waste from homes in
Southern England in 2010 that was recycled.
-The final graph shows overall recycling rates in England
over a 12 year period.
One of the first topics that you will study in A-Level
Geography is the Carbon Cycle. This concept looks at the way carbon naturally, and with human intervention,
moves from different places on Earth.
For example Carbon is stored in the Earth's crust as coal, oil and gas; humans burn this Carbon and therefore
Carbon is moved to the atmosphere and stored, as shown in the first graph above.
It is widely accepted that Humans are responsible for this increase in atmospheric co2 and will also face the
impacts caused by anthropogenic climate change (this is the term we use for man-made climate change).
It is therefore our responsibility as global citizens to play an active role in reducing our carbon footprint and also
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle the Earth's precious resources. As A-Level Geography students you are likely to be
the most knowledgeable students at Elliott Hudson College on this topic; you, therefore, should become an
ambassador on how we, as a college, can reduce our impact.
Your summer project is to create a single idea that we can use at college to reduce our impact.
Realistically we can't spend money on roof wind turbines or solar panels, but we can change other aspects of
college life. It is your job to identify one cheap and easy way of helping your new Elliott Hudson College building
become more environmentally aware. Your work can be presented in whatever way you chose, for example it
could be an A4 poster or as a single side of A4 text. The very best ideas will be implemented by your Student
Union.
Your A-Level Geography teacher Mrs Carr will collect this from you in your first week of lessons in September.
