Bringing popular stories to life, our practical, outdoor Science & Art activities give your
pupils the opportunity to:



Look more closely at the natural world around them
Use different senses to compare different textures, sounds and smells, and
Use a range of materials creatively.
Activities are designed for one class, each session lasts approx 90 minutes:
The sessions are designed for classes of approx. 30 pupils, lasting approx 90 minutes.
Theme/topic: Witches, dragons, wizards
Curriculum link: Plant structure, working scientifically
Pupils develop their senses and observational skills in this fun activity based
around witches, wizards and dragons.
Children forage for a sturdy stick and transform it into a witch’s wand or
wizard’s staff by decorating it with leaves, stems and petals found around the
school grounds. Using herbs and other scented or colourful leaves and flowers,
they create their magic potion to scare away the dragon. But where is he?
Children have to follow the “shiny scale” trail to his lair, before they can cast
their spell … and rid their school of the naughty dragon. On the way back to
class, children can finish the outdoor session gathering leaves to press and
other natural materials to make a dragon collage or wizard/witch’s cloak.
Theme/topic: Flowers / growing / dinosaurs
(based on “How to Grow a Dinosaur”)
Curriculum focus: identifying and describing structure of common flowers;
observing closely; using senses; planting seeds and observing growth
Can the children find any prehistoric plants like those in the book around their
school buildings? Children have to identify and draw the flowers they find to
place in their indoor “flowerbed” and then head to the grassy areas to search
for wild flowers. Specimens are carefully identified and selected for pressing
back in the classroom. As at the end of the story, children then get an
opportunity to plant a selection of herb and wildflower seeds, ready to
nurture back in the classroom.
Theme/topic: Trees
Curriculum focus: identifying and describing structure of trees; observing
closely; using senses;
Pupils use all of their senses to discover more about the trees and shrubs in
the school grounds – a fun mix of seeking games, blindfold activities, mirror
walks, tasting challenges and model making with natural materials. Leaves or
twigs collected can be used by the children to make pages for a short guide or
pop-up book about their favourite tree/s.
