Of the Things We Think, Say or Do …
1. Is it the TRUTH?

The Rotary Club of Lubbock, 85 years old and still going strong, met as
scheduled on Wednesday, February 7, 2007, at the McInturff Center. The
meeting was called to order at 12:12 pm. by Club President Terry Key. After a round of applause for Dr.
Ruth Holmes, our pianist, President Key made three important member announcements:
* Rotarian Norman Igo passed away on February 6 in Dallas. He was a 27-year member
of our club and held the classification of Architecture: Engineering. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on
Saturday, February 10, at Broadway Church of Christ.
* General Dudley Faver is expected to return home on Saturday, after recovering from
hip surgery late last year.
* Claude Freeman is in the hospital but is expected to return home soon.
Board member Coffee Conner then came forward to offer our prayer for the day, and
Gary McCoy led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Since today is our annual Diekemper Luncheon, we had a number of special guests – in
particular, Lou Diekemper and her daughters, Mia Maddoux and Diane Burchard. Past President David

Board member James Pipkin then introduced our distinguished underwriters for today’s
luncheon: Becknell Wholesale, Pieter and Lou Ann Bergstein, Bill and Lucy Brown, Dr. James Carpenter,
Warlick and Bee Carr, David and Gaylan Cobb, Emergent Technologies Inc./WesTech Ventures I, Dr.
Chester and Jacque Golightly, Walter and Anne Huffman, Johnson Controls, Latrelle Joy, Lubbock
National Bank (Terry Key and Charles Key), Dr. Sam King, Bill Lane, Laura Monroe, Monte Monroe, RJD

Wilson, George and Vivian Wilson. Others who made special contributions to the South Plains Food
Bank were Mike Bennett, Donald Craig, Jack Nelson, James Pipkin, Max Tarbox, and Ron Vickers.
Next, Past District Governor Dr. Davis Armistead came forward to introduce our speaker - Donna Chandler, president of the South Plains Food Bank. In his introductory remarks, Dr. Armistead
said that Ms. Chandler grew up in the country, graduated from Idalou High School and Texas Tech, and
became involved in the Food Bank in 1990. She and her husband Ron have two children and one
granddaughter. She is also involved in Becknell Wholesale, her family business.
To begin her presentation, Donna traced the history of the South Plains Food Bank,
which began “with a vision by Ray and Lou Diekemper back in 1983.” It was then, some 24 years ago,
that Ray Diekemper “called together a group of leaders from our community and called for the creation of
a food bank for our city,” she said.
In 1983, the Food Bank began in a 5,000 square foot warehouse, working with 28
agencies that delivered food. Last year, more than 6.8 million pounds of food were distributed through
230 agencies in a 21 county area.
New programs have been started almost yearly since that time. The Literacy Program
began in 1988, the Second Helpings Program in 1990, the Apple Orchard in 1994, the Community
Gardens in 1994, the first apple crop in 1997, Cooking for Class in 1997, Plant a Seed in 1997, the Kids
Café in 2000, the GRUB program in 2001, and the Back Pack program in 2006.
In 1991, land was donated for the Breedlove Dehydration Plant, which began serving the
community in 1996 with 4.5 million servings of food. By 2002, the plant was producing 6 million servings
of food. But in 2005, in response to disaster relief needs throughout the world, Breedlove shipped 100
million servings of food for relief of the suffering, at the same time that the city of Lubbock raised $1
million for disaster relief.
Through it all, for almost a quarter of a century, the Food Bank has followed the
Diekemper’s vision. “We are, above and beyond everything else, committed to alleviating hunger, and to
giving hope to the hungry,” Ms. Chandler said.
Following the presentation, Past President Dr. James Carpenter came forward to make a
special presentation – the Food Bank Volunteer Award – which was given to club member Jack Gibson.
Special thanks were also given to Dr. Chester Golighty and the Diekemper Luncheon Committee.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 1 p.m.
