JULY NEWSLETTER 2015
Welcome to another addition of the GSA monthly newsletter!! We hope that you enjoy the read
and that you pick up on some valuable information!!
Latest from the GSA Coaching Department:
School Holidays are a thing of the past and our SA Hockey kidz program is in full swing (literally).
The main focus for the 1st month is stick and ball control and emphasizing the safety associated
with swinging sticks and flying hockey balls. We are very strict when it comes to lifting of the sticks
above waist height as this is when injuries occur. We do provide limited amount of sticks at the
training sessions but do suggest buying your child their own hockey stick as then it will be custom
sized to them. We also recommend shin pads and gum guards but please do not rush out and
buy all these items if you feel it is not necessary as your child will still be allowed to play without
them. We only recommend these for safety reasons.
The general size curve for hockey sticks are as follows: Grade R’s – size 26, Grade 1 – size 28 and
grade 2 & 3 – size 30. Once again this is the general sizing curve and all depends on your child’s
growth rate. Next month will see the kidz focusing more on game related drills and skills as they
should have come to grips with the basic skills by then.
Joke of the Month:
We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.

Sun safe tips:
Reducing childhood exposure to sun’s UV rays is important to minimise lifetime skin cancer risk. Keeping
your child’s skin protected while they’re at school or playing sport is vital. Garvz will be applying NIVEA Sun
SPF 50+ to Garvz kids this season to keep them protected while they’re out on the field. This forms part of
the BE SUN SMART School programme, which provides serviced sunscreen dispensers to schools. Enquire at
your child’s school.
Nutrition Tip & Information:
Spring Vegetables
Vegetables give your body the proper amount of vitamins, provitamins, dietary minerals and fiber
necessary to function properly.



Asparagus contains no sodium, cholesterol or fat making it an extremely healthy spring food option.
It is also high in folic acid, which aids red blood cells in spreading oxygen throughout your body. All
these great side effects keep your body and mind energized.
Broccoli is a great source of Vitamin C, believe it or not. That's not only good for your immune
system, it's good for absorbing calcium which keeps your bones strong. It also contains nutrients that
have been found to prevent tumour growth, which is a huge plus!
Spinach is an excellent source of iron. Iron is used by hemoglobin which is in red blood cells. Red
blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of your body; iron helps keep your body supplied
with blood rich in oxygen.
Spring Fruits
Spring fruits are a great addition to jazz up any normal salad or marinade, get creative! Not only
do they taste sweet and delicious, but they also carry great benefit for your health.




Apricots are a great example of a spring fruit because they naturally contain beta carotene, which
is a powerful antioxidant that can reduce bad cholesterol levels, prevent heart disease and protect
against cancer.
Strawberries are a great source of Vitamin C. Usually eating around 5 good-sized strawberries can
give your body its full dose of Vitamin C for the day, and it will usually only contain around 25-40
calories.
Mangoes are not only delicious by themselves or in salads, they also contain phenols that act as
antioxidants and can sometimes act as anti-cancers.
Pineapples are a sweet fruit perfect for lunch or as a quick snack. They are especially good for your
body because they contain high levels of manganese. Manganese assists the body in the formation
of connective tissue and bones. It can also help with certain blood-clotting processes. It also plays a
role in your body's fat and carbohydrate metabolism.
Training Tip & Information:
When holding a hockey stick, you need to ensure that your right hand is in the middle of the stick
(almost where the grip meets the stick) and your left hand is on top. This will allow better control
when it comes to dribbling and stopping the ball. Stopping and passing the ball must be done
with the your head over the ball and when passing ensure a step is taken towards the player you
are passing to in order to increase the power of the pass. Always remember that the stick is not
allowed to be lifted above the waist.
Closing note and up-coming attractions:
In closing we would like to thank you for the continued support of Garvz Sports Academy and
would like to encourage you to play outdoors with your kidz as much as possible!!
