Out of School Services
Out of school services are for school-age children to play and learn and have fun in groups. In Brent they are
in schools, at community centres or in parks and sports centres.
Registration with the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted)
From September 2008, childcare providers must join the early years register if they care for children up to the
end reception class age or the compulsory childcare register if they care for children aged 5 to under 8 years.
They may join Ofsted’s voluntary register if they only care for children over 8 years or they provide after
school activities that do not count as childcare. They do not register with Ofsted if they are provided by a
school on school premises but parents who are eligible for the childcare element of Working Tax Credit may
claim for childcare at after school provision in schools.
Ask at your child’s school to find out what services they provide.
Some have clubs for particular activities such as football or music even if they do not have an after school
club. These activities do not count as childcare and if there is a charge you will not be able to claim childcare
costs for them unless they are on Ofsted’s voluntary childcare register.
What are the different types of out of school service?
Breakfast clubs – open in the mornings before school so children can enjoy breakfast there and never be
late. Schools can only provide the service to their own pupils so ask at your child’s school.
After school clubs – open in the afternoons usually between about 3.30pm and 6pm.
Holiday play schemes – open during school holidays from about 8.30am to about 6pm.
How do I know my child will be safe and secure?
Out of school services registered with Ofsted are checked to make sure staff are suitable to look after
children. At least half of them must be trained. The minimum staffing ratios are 1 worker, paid or voluntary, to
every 8 children aged 3 to under 8. Care for children aged 8+ must not adversely affect younger children.
There must be at least two full time staff members in every group of 26 children. At least one of these must
have or be working towards an appropriate qualification. Out of school services provided by schools are
inspected by Ofsted as part of the school’s regular education inspection.
All staff, whether paid or voluntary, full time or part time, qualified or unqualified, must have a Disclosure and
Barring Service (DBS) enhanced disclosure.
All types of out of school service on Ofsted’s early years, compulsory or voluntary registers or provided by
schools allow parents to claim childcare element of Working Tax Credit if they are on lower incomes. For
holiday care, the provider must provide the service for at least four consecutive weeks. Call the Tax Credits
Helpline on 0845 300 3900 to find out if you can claim help with out of school childcare costs. Text phone
0845 300 3909, website www.hmrc.gov.uk and click on Tax Credits.
How many children will there be?
In Brent it varies from 10 to 150, depending on the accommodation. Higher numbers are taken at a smaller
number of locations in the holidays.
What age range of children will be there?
Most children attending out of school services are aged between 5 and 11. Some services provide places for
three and four year olds to fit around nursery or pre-school education. Some services provide places for
children aged 10-14.
What about part-time childcare?
Many out of school services will be happy to offer you part-time childcare. You may need to book regular
sessions to make sure a place is available when you need it.

Things to do in the holidays and at weekends
Access for people with special needs is good at most of these locations.
Your children travel free on public transport in Greater London. Under 11s travelling with an adult don’t even
need an Oyster card. Young people aged 11 to under 18 do need one and you can get the application form at
any station. It may take up to two weeks to be issued. More information: www.tfl.gov.uk
Brent itself has great parks: Round wood and Gladstone are two of the largest local parks, while Fryent
Country Park and the Welsh Harp Reservoir offer great days out. Take a picnic to cut costs. Enjoy the
wildlife: butterflies, birds which are remarkably tame in the woodlands of the Welsh Harp, perhaps take up
sailing at one of several clubs, learn to ride your bike, have fun with scooters. Roundwood and Gladstone
Parks host major Brent events and fairs. More information: www.brent.gov.uk/parks .
The libraries have lots going on for children with and without their parents and some are open on Sundays as
well as weekdays, www.brent.gov.uk/libraries . Pop into your local library and pick up the summer holiday
programme. You are always welcome at the Brent Museum, www.brent.gov.uk/museum at Willesden Green
Library.
Further off, Hampstead Heath is easy to get to on London Overground – Hampstead Heath and Gospel Oak
stations both serve the southern side. There is a summertime lido at Gospel Oak too. Walk up to Kenwood
House with its long slopes for rolling down and its superb gardens with glorious bright colours.
Richmond Park is easy to get to on London Overground too, or you can stop off at Kew Gardens for a
complete day out visiting the hot houses, taking the train when you are tired, enjoying the play area, picnicking
or using the cafes as you wish. www.kew.org
The 266 bus takes you to Acton Park which has a play hut, sandpit, playground and cafe, and regular fairs. It
also stops at Ravenscourt Park in Hammersmith where you can enjoy the well-maintained paddling pool,
sandpit, cafe, adventure playground, dog-free areas, football areas and frogs in season in the ornamental
garden all in a surprisingly small area which is less tiring for younger children.
London Overground goes to Kensington Olympia station from where it’s a short walk to Holland Park which
has a supervised adventure playground, gardens, lawns, cafes and wildlife areas.
The British Museum www.britishmuseum.org , (Tottenham Court Road tube station), the Victoria and Albert
www.vam.ac.uk , Natural History www.nhm.ac.uk , and Science www.sciencemuseum.org.uk museums
(South Kensington tube station) are great places for people of all ages. They are free. There are activities for
all ages and they are great places for new walkers on wet days, clean, warm and spacious with plenty for
everyone to look at. There are many other museums in London too; including the London Transport
Museum’s which has a depot at Acton Town Station www.ltmuseum.co.uk .
A complete day out is a tour of Docklands Light Railway where your children can be the drivers sitting up
front. Stop off at Mudchute City Farm (extra facilities for those with special needs), enjoy the shops and
covered market at Greenwich, visit the National Maritime Museum www.nmm.ac.uk , enjoy the park with
sandpit, playground and cafe, re-join the railway, and see aeroplanes taking off at London City Airport.
Tate Britain (Pimlico station) and Tate Modern (Southwark station) have art carts on Sundays. Children also
like modern art. More information: www.tate.org.uk .Time Out magazine lists things to do for children in every
edition. Local and national newspapers do a round-up of activities for families at the start of each holiday.
Local papers have regular weekly listings of all kinds of things to do.

home. A Boffin can come to parties or other special occasions too.

age groups 6+ and 9+. Visit www.puffinpost.co.uk . Puffin Post began in 1967 and now has an online Puffin
