MULTIPLICATION FACTS
Math: Our topic for December concentrates on division using
2-digit divisors. We'll be reviewing division patterns (such
as 320 ÷ 80 = 4, 3200 ÷ 80 = 40, and 32,000 ÷ 80 = 400), and
estimating using rounding and compatible numbers. Finally, we
will hone our problem solving skills by deciding if any
information, in a given word problem is missing or if it is
extra and not needed.
Science: During our weather unit, we will be exploring the
various tools that meteorologists use to help them predict the
weather, such as anemometers used to measure wind speed.
Students will be taking daily weather observations, recording
the temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, wind
direction, cloud coverage, precipitation, and air pressure. At
the conclusion of our observations, we will discuss any
relationships that were noted between temperature and other
varying factors and create a double line graph. Students will
take a close look at each part of the water cycle;
evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and accumulation. We
will also explore the layers of the atmosphere: troposphere,
mesosphere, stratosphere, and thermosphere. We are in the
process of setting up a presentation by Meteorologist Sharon
Ray who will share some of her responsibilities as a
meteorologist and show us some demonstrations to help students
grasp some of the concepts we discussed in class. Some parts
of this unit may be completed after returning from Christmas
Break.
Writing: Exciting things are happening in writing this month!
We will be studying figurative language. The students will
become experts on figurative language and teach their
classmates about it! There will also be weekly spelling
quizzes throughout the rest of the month so be sure to be
studying at home.
Reading: In reading this month, students are continuing to
study non-fiction reading material. While reading, students
are learning skills for identifying and applying comprehension
strategies in order to better understand the non-fiction text
structures of chronological order, compare and contrast, cause
and effect, problem and solution, and description.
