To work in mixed ability
groups of 3 or 4 children.
Activity:
Work in groups of 3 or 4 children. Show them 3 bottles of water which have been
mixed with food colouring (each bottle with a primary colour.) Explain that we are
going to mix these colours to see what happens. What do they think might happen?
Take turns mixing each primary colour into a clear container/jug. First add equal
quantities of each colour and see what happens. Now add more of one colour. What
has changed? Keep repeating the process to allow the children to predict and
explore.
KEY NOTES:
Demonstrate carefully mixing the coloured water and then allow the children to take
charge of their own experiment. Ask questions and encourage the children to
comment on what they can see happening.
