Adult focus sheet 30-50 months – Mixing colours This is an adult led activity targeted towards meeting 40-60 months in exploring and using media and materials. As each group completes the activity plot their names in the table below, when complete a whole class overview will show any key next steps needed to improve further development. www.earlybirdyeducation.com 40-60 months EAD: Exploring and using media and materials Adult focus sheet- Mixing colours Week beg: EAD, CL, PSE, UW Adult: Learning Intention: Success Criteria: *To talk about and notice change. * To manipulate materials. *To understand that media can be combined to create new effects. Differentiation: To explore what happens when they mix colours. To work in mixed ability groups of 3 or 4 children. Activity: Work in groups of 3 or 4 children. Show them 3 bottles of water which have been mixed with food colouring (each bottle with a primary colour.) Explain that we are going to mix these colours to see what happens. What do they think might happen? Take turns mixing each primary colour into a clear container/jug. First add equal quantities of each colour and see what happens. Now add more of one colour. What has changed? Keep repeating the process to allow the children to predict and explore. KEY NOTES: Demonstrate carefully mixing the coloured water and then allow the children to take charge of their own experiment. Ask questions and encourage the children to comment on what they can see happening.
