State Adopts Next Generation Science Standards
SACRAMENTO-New science standards designed to prepare
students to thrive in a changing economy were approved
today by the State Board of Education.
Building the California
Framework for NGSS
Timeline
Timeline
•
July 2011: Framework for K-12 Science Education Released by National
Research Council
•
March 2013: Final Draft of NGSS Released
•
2013-16: NGSS Awareness Phase - represents an introduction to the CA
NGSS, the initial planning of systems implementation, and establishment of
collaborations
•
2015-18: NGSS Transition Phase – build foundational resources,
implementing needs assessments, establishing new professional learning
opportunities, and expand collaborations between all stakeholders.
•
2015-2017: 5th, 8th, and 10th graders take existing CST/CMA/CAPA
science test.
•
2016-beyond: NGSS Implementation Phase – expand professional
learning support, fully align curriculum, instruction, and assessments, and
effectively integrate these across the field.
•
November 2018: PROPOSED: Instructional materials adoption by SBE.
•
2018-19: Anticipated Administration of Operational NGSS Science
Assessments
Next Generation Science
Standards (NGSS)
• K-12 Science Standards
• Developed through a collaborative, state-led process
•
•
K-12 teachers, state science and policy staff, higher education
faculty, scientists, engineers, cognitive scientists, and business
leaders
Designed to provide all students an internationally
benchmarked science education
Conceptual Shifts
1)
Reflect the Interconnected Nature of Science as it is
Practiced and Experienced in the Real World
2)
Student performance expectations – NOT curriculum
3)
Build Coherently from K–12
4)
Focus on Deeper Understanding of Content as well as
Application of Content
5)
Science and Engineering are Integrated
6)
Designed to prepare students for college, career, and
citizenship
7)
NGSS and Common Core State Standards (ELA and
Mathematics) are Aligned
3 Dimensions
A Framework for K-12
Science Education
•Scientific & Engineering Practices
•Disciplinary Core Ideas
•Crosscutting Concepts
Breaking Down the Standards
Scientific & Engineering
Practices
• Asking questions (for science) and defining problems
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
(for engineering)
Developing and using models
Planning and carrying out investigations
Analyzing and interpreting data
Using mathematics and computational thinking
Constructing explanations (for science) and designing
solutions (for engineering)
Engaging in argument from evidence
Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information
Crosscutting Concepts
• Patterns
• Cause and Effect
• Scale, Proportion, and Quantity
• Systems and Systems Models
• Energy and Matter
• Structure and Function
• Stability and Change
NGSS & CCSS
Next Steps…
• NGSS Rollout Task Force was
created
• We’re focusing on the Science and
Engineering Practices to begin our
OUSD implementation of the NGSS
• We are using the current California
State Standards for Science while
CDE constructs the new CA Science
Framework (expected completion 2017-2018)
