Join our team!
It will require the energy and enthusiasm of
15,000 volunteers to deliver the 2018
Commonwealth Games.
150+ Sports Specific Volunteers will be required
to deliver the Basketball Competition across
three cities.
We are looking for people that:
Enjoy working in a team environment who are
dedicated, friendly, & knowledgeable.

Dates
The 2018 Commonwealth Games will open on
April 4 and conclude on April 15.
The Basketball preliminary rounds and
qualifying round will be held in Cairns and
Townsville from April 5 to April 10. The
Semi Finals & Grand Finals will be held at
the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition
Centre from April 13 to April 15.
In addition to the days of competition there will
be volunteering opportunities at training
venues from March 25.
Come games time you will need to be
available for shifts as required across all dates
of the event and in the city where the games
are located. You will not be able to pick and
choose your shifts or city so make sure that
you can block out all of the days in your diary.
Locations
The Basketball competition will be
held in three venues across the
state:GOLD COAST
Cairns Convention Centre,
Townsville Entertainment Centre
and Gold Coast Convention &
Exhibition Centre.
Basketball training venues will be:Cairns Basketball,
Townsville RSL Stadium,
The Southport School.
Costs & Benefits

Volunteers need to be aware that all
travel, accommodation and other
costs will be at the expense of the
volunteer, and that volunteer
accreditation will only allow access
to the specific venues for rostered
shifts. * Note you must be 16 years old when the official
GC2018 Volunteer Registration portal opens to be a part of the
Basketball Team.
All volunteers will receive:

Roles
Sport Services Team Member: these roles include performing duties such as marshalling athletes, checking accreditation,
assisting in the training/warm-up area, transporting team equipment throughout the venue, aiding liaison officers to escort teams
and technical officials around the venue and field of play. Duties will be rotated to ensure that every volunteer gets an opportunity
to experience working close to the field of play and having the ability to feel like you are sharing the dream with the players. This is
an ideal role for volunteers that have worked at major events or Basketball specific events at State or National level.
Sport Services Team Member - Team Liaison and Information Officer: these roles will liaise with team managers, athletes and
officials from competing countries to ensure that they have all of the information and assistance that they require to make the
Games an outstanding experience. You’ll need great people skills and a strong knowledge of the sport of Basketball at a National
or International level.
Field of play Team Member: these roles are up close and vital to the success of each Basketball event. These volunteers will
control the movement on the Field of Play and can even be a part of the game by being a floor wiper or field a play supervisor. You
will need a strong understanding of the game and technical skills to fulfil these roles but you’ll be rewarded with being front and
centre. These roles include the need to problem solve, communicate and take direction at a high level and work well under
pressure. A strong knowledge of the sport of Basketball at a National or International level is a must.
Technical Official Services: You’ll need a strong understanding of the roles our technical officials undertake and their
requirements to operate at an optimum level. This role involves arranging meeting spaces, assisting with distribution of reports and
equipment and supporting the needs of the technical officials on and off the field of play. In this role you’ll be rewarded with being
on the field of play at times and also seeing a side of the game not many people get to experience. If you are a Referee, Score
Table Official or Statistician that may not qualify to officiate at the game this is the role for you.
Roles: Specialist
These roles will require significant experience and proven expertise in the specific area
Field of Play Manager: A number of positions are available for Field of Play Managers across the
games. Those that have been in this role before know how critical it is to ensure our events are
presented professionally. Field of Play Managers are required to be calm and decisive in a
professional manner to deliver a high level event. You will be working in an ever changing
environment and will need the skills to lead a team to implement and deliver a GREAT competition.
Sports Presentation Specialist: There are opportunities available for sport specific announcers,
announcers assistant and music operators who will need a high degree of knowledge of the game and
its nuances and be able to work with a professional presentation team to deliver an outstanding event.
