provide a range of services for people who
have developmental disabilities and live at
home with their families. Services include
advocacy, case management, respite,
recreation, parent training, reimbursement
for goods & services, transportation, social
clubs/support groups, counseling, etc.

Rose Hazlitt, PsyD. is a licensed psychologist
with a doctorate of psychology in school
psychology from Alfred University. Dr. Hazlitt
is also a SCIP instructor and a member of the
Arc of Steuben’s Autism Resource Team. She
specializes in behavioral assessments, developing
behavioral interventions, and training providers
and caregivers in research-based theories and
techniques. The objective is to provide
caregivers with effective strategies for
responding to crisis situations and diffusing
aggressive behavior.

Maureen Chaffer, Mary Cariola Children’s
Center: discussing the impact sensory processing
disorders present in a child with challenging
behaviors and offers practical tips and tricks that can
be used to support your child.

#2: Empowering Parents of Children with
Special Needs by Tristram Smith Ph.D., URMC:
describing the eight most important parenting
strategies to address challenging behavior in children
with special needs at home, and provide resources for
additional help.
#3: Visual Approaches by Jen Hackett, Family
Autism Center and Camp Puzzle Peace: learn
about practical approaches to support individuals
with challenging behavior, walk away with tools in the
forms of visuals they can use, and possibly practice in
an understanding and supportive group.
